“Dear PoPville,

A woman came walking down our street, got naked and exposed herself to a neighbor a few doors up from us, and then walked up to our door unaware to us and shoved a wad of burning tissue paper through our mail slot, kicked our door and left. Some of the paper stuck in the mail slot, while another burning chunk fell to the floor.

We quickly grabbed the burning paper and threw it outside and then watched the woman continue down the street knocking over trash cans and just acting, well, crazy.

We called the police and they actually drove up and talked to her and then let her go. When they got up to us a few blocks further up the street, we told the police that — in addition to the indecent exposure they had been alerted to — she also shoved burning paper through our door. The police car turned around and went back to find her. We’re not sure what happened next.

I snapped a photo of one of the pieces of the burnt paper in a “re-creation” of where we first found the burning paper.

That was nuts – and it makes us feel a little vulnerable that anyone with a mental illness can walk up and throw burning paper into our mail slot. I know that our house was a random target and this might never happen again, but we’re now thinking of sealing our mail slot shut and putting a mail box outside.

Our fear is – what if we weren’t home and the dogs were here and the house caught on fire? What if it was the middle of the night and we were sleeping?

We were also less than impressed with the actions of the police. They seemed to kind of not care too much. I fear they will just let this woman go and she could do this again – with far worse consequences.

Our living room still smells like burnt paper as we sit here a little stunned.

Update: So, we never had a police officer come back to our place to tell us anything – Did they catch the woman? Was she on drugs? Is she a sort of known mentally ill person that they have a history with? How random was this attack?

We called our local station and they could not tell us either and said we’d have to call a 911 dispatcher. We kind of didn’t want to tie up any more 911 lines with this issue, so we dropped it. Overall we were very unimpressed with the police response to a situation which – had this woman been more competent in attempted arson – could have been much worse.”

Ed. Note: We previously spoke about DC’s Mental Health’s Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program here. Some good numbers to keep around:

nso

From a press release:

“The National Symphony Orchestra will make Capitol Hill and H Street, NE, the focus of its free community engagement activities in January 2014. Between January 7 and 13, members of the NSO will break into small ensembles to perform chamber music and educational activities as requested by more than 20 community organizations. The events will include three free orchestral concerts, one at Atlas Performing Arts Center, and two at Union Station.

The first orchestral event will be a performance at Atlas Performing Arts Center on January 8. Built in 1938, in the area then known as Swampoodle, this recently renovated art-deco cinema has been key to the revitalization of the Near Northeast portion of DC. Assistant Conductor Ankush Kumar Bahl will lead this performance and the two at Union Station.

Two performances will take place in the East Hall of Union Station on January 11, one at 3 p.m. aimed for children and families, and a second at 7 p.m. Works by John Adams (A Short Ride in a Fast Machine), Aaron Copland (John Henry – A Railroad Ballad), and more round out this travel-themed program. The Women’s Committee for the National Symphony Orchestra will present the ever-popular “Instrument Petting Zoo” at 1:30 p.m. outside the East Hall.

All NSO events are free, but not all events are open to the public. Events at schools, for example, may be closed except to the students and faculty. Some venues may have a cover charge or service charge. Please check with the venue in advance.

A complete schedule of the week’s events can be found here“.

“Dear PoPville,

It appears that Taylor Gourmet’s foray into Philly Cheesesteaks – Taylor Charles Steak and Ice on H Street – has gone belly up. The windows are papered over and it’s clearly closed. Not hugely surprising, as it never seemed to do much business. I also found it a tremendously disappointing place – really bad, overpriced cheesesteaks.”

A friend of mine checked it out this morning and sends word that a permit has been posted for “alteration/repair”. Strangely there is no mention on Taylor Charles’ twitter and they haven’t sent a tweet since Dec. 21st. Their website is still active though.

A rep. for the restaurant tells me via email:

“All we can say right now are cheesesteaks are not dead.”

Will update when more info becomes available.

1110 H Street, NE during H Street festival in 2012

“Dear PoPville,

Any idea what happened to this place? It never did open! And still looks almost ready to go, with chalk on the chalkboards, etc.”

Newsom opened briefly during the H Street festival in 2012 and ever since has been a complete mystery. Back in 2012 the normally accurate @HStreetDC_ said they would open in October of that year. Last night I spoke to a few folks from H Street and nobody had a clue what was going on. Late Monday night Newsom’s window was damaged by a car running into it. Updates when more info is known about their plans.

Good news for the western end of H Street – a new restaurant, D.C. Harvest, is coming to 517 H Street, NE across the street from Yoga District. Washington Business Journal got the scoop:

“The Ringel brothers plan to open D.C. Harvest at 517 H St. NE this spring, a neighborhood, farm-to-table restaurant in the ever-growing Atlas District. Arthur most recently served as executive chef at Hank’s Oyster Bar in Dupont Circle after stints at Vidalia, Vermillion and Todd English’s Olives.”
