“Someone is finally coming into the former Casa Nonna space on Conn Ave, STK”

Back in January we learned STK would be taking over the former Casa Nonna space at Connecticut and N Street, NW.

STK’s website says:

STK artfully blends two concepts into one—the modern steakhouse and a chic lounge. The restaurant’s signature DNA includes plaster cast horns, curvilinear black platform seats and a palette of black gloss and cream. A large central lounge area is furnished with creamy leather banquettes and textured crocodile tiles, and is surrounded by an elevated dining room for more formal dining. Theatrical lights illuminate each table, while smoky mirrors allow patrons to catch a glimpse of the surroundings while a DJ creates an energetic vibe throughout the entire space.

As anticipated, steak is the main attraction. With a female-friendly mindset, STK offers small, medium and large cuts of meat, as well as naturally raised options and market fresh fish entrees. Aside from steak, signature items include Parmesan Truffle Fries; Lil’ BRGs; Shrimp Rice Krispies; Sweet Corn Pudding; and Jump Lump Crab Salad.

@Greg_Hudson also sends this video for STK’s London opening:

Back in January I confirmed some scuttlebutt that a Cuban restaurant was coming to the former Singapore Bistro space next to Science Club on 19th Street between L and M. Coming soon signage has now been posted and they’ve done a ton of work on the space. They have a location in New York and you can see their menu here.. I’m really psyched to see them save the great bay windows on the side:

@toddkliman tweets the sad news:

“Big #DCrestaurant news: Eola, the inventive, offal-loving tasting menu restaurant in Dupont, will close. Last night of service: Aug. 31”

Eola’s website says:

“Regretfully Eola’s last service will be August 31st. The past four years have been an incredible ride and I’m proud of what we have accomplished. I would to extend my gratitude to my staff both past and present. Without their hard work and dedication, Eola would not have existed. I would also like to thank our guests of the past four years for their support.

Thanks to a reader for sending word that the former strip club and long vacant building at 1819 M St, NW (just west of Connecticut Ave.) has a boatload of permits:

photo-4

I walked by and the space has been completely gutted. One of the permits lists the tenant as “The Mpire club”. I’m guessing it will remain a strip club?

Recently JP’s strip club reopened after a fire and long closure in Glover Park.

Speaking of painting brick – two ‘coming soon’ spots have recently been painted. First the former Cafe Green space (above) which is set to become an “East London Style Cafe” called Duke’s Grocery has been painted blue:

And the new Mediterranean restaurant, Dunya, coming to 8th and Florida (just east of 9th and U St, NW) has been painted brown. And you the roof deck is looking seriously sweet. Here’s what it looked like before:

“The Mathematical Association of America’s headquarters located at 1529 18th Street, N.W., in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Built in 1903, the Classical Revival style building served as the residence of Charles Evans Hughes when the photo on the left was taken in 1921. (via the Library of Congress) The building is designated as a contributing property to the Dupont Circle Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

In addition to Hughes, previous occupants of the building include the Cuban Legation and its Minister Plenipotentiary Carlos Manuel de Céspedes y Quesada, Senator Frederic M. Sackett, the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States, and the Association of the United States Army.

This is one of my older photos originally uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.”

The restaurant shuffle at 1633 P Street, NW continues. Back in Oct. 2012 Heritage India moved into the former Skewers space above the then Cafe Luna. Now Malgudi has moved into the Cafe Luna space (first spotted by @jsidman) in the bottom space. Malgudi is owned by Heritage India – check out their menu here. We first heard about Malgudi back in March when they opened their Glover Park location featuring “unique curries, dosas and uthappams of South India”. Word is that the food is really good.

Will anyone miss Cafe Luna here?
