N Street between 17th and 18th St, NW

Every year someone writes in asking about the boarded up buildings on N Street between 17th and 18th St, NW. It is such a prime location that it seemingly makes no sense that they’ve been boarded up for so long. Sadly legal disputes has halted any movement. But maybe some positive movement is coming? Washington Business Journal reports DC sold the liens on these properties:

“1745, 1749 and 1755 N St. NW: Owned by N Street Follies Ltd. and its principal Morton Bender, these three Dupont Circle rowhouses sold for a total of $320,679.64, including $170,000 of surplus. Bender has owned the properties since 1988, but his attempts to redevelop (as an office building, then as a hotel) have run into one problem after another.”

Think this will spur development?

Back in May I shared some scuttlebutt that a new restaurant from Jackie Greenbaum was coming to the former Cajun Experience space. Greenbaum is owner of Jackie’s in Silver Spring and El Chucho in Columbia Heights.  In July the scuttlebutt was confirmed. In addition to the name, Bar Charley, now comes more details from the Washington Post:

“A sneak peak [of the menu] reveals a lobster roll, bison sloppy joe, salt cod and spaghetti, smoked chicken thighs on dirty rice, shrimp and pork dumplings, papri chaat, and frankfurters with warm potato salad. Exceptions to those small plates (subject to change) will be two dishes designed for two: a wood-grilled steak and a whole fish.”

Standby for an expected August 22nd opening.

Last week we learned more about Thomas Foolery opening in the former Zeke’s DC Donutz space in Dupont. We knew the place was gonna be “goofball” and it is refreshingly so. I stopped by yesterday for some photos and also learned that this will be the home to the “brick and mortar” spot in Dupont that the Big Cheese Food Truck mentioned they were opening. You can see the full food options here and you can see the beer and drink list here.

Thomas Foolery is opening this Wednesday, 11 am at 2029 P Street, NW. They’ll be open 11am – 12am weekdays and 11am – 2am on the weekends.

Have a look inside after the jump. (more…)

Monday, August 12, 2013 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Just as most DC residents are closely acquainted with DC Brau today, there was a time in recent history when many Washingtonians knew of Christian Heurich, his successful Foggy Bottom brewery, and his iconic mansion below Dupont Circle. The last time anyone tasted a Heurich beer was 1956, the year his brewery closed and made way for the Kennedy Center. The Chr. Heurich Brewing Co. had been the District’s last production brewery, and no others existed in the city until DC Brau opened in 2011. Heurich’s legacy survives at his former mansion, the Heurich House Museum, which today displays the Heurich family’s original furnishings and decorations, as well as the home’s original state-of-the-art technology. Last week we learned about the new “East London Style Cafe” coming to former Cafe Green space in Dupont.

Thanks to a reader for sending:

“that new East London style cafe on 17th st in the old java green will be apparently called Duke’s Grocery and is from the former chef at Rugby Cafe and 2404.”

Another reader sent this description from Duke’s Grocery facebook:

Bringing East London to East Dupont! Duke’s Grocery is a casual market, cafe & pub serving seasonally driven eats & good drinks.

We are excited to be part of the 17th Street / Dupont community!

Come join us early for freshly brewed coffee and espresso, house-made pastries & cakes. If you’re really hungry, grab a proper English Breakfast with our homemade banger sausages and black pudding. The front patio is perfect for a coffee and newspaper before work. Looking for something on the lighter side? We have a full menu of hand squeezed juices, beigels (like they make them back on Brick Lane) and small breakfast plates.

Cruise on by at lunch and grab one of our delicious sarnies from our ever changing lunch menu. All of our meats, soups, and charcuterie are hand-made. If you’re in a rush, no worries! Just give us a call and we will deliver to your office. If a relaxing place to work is what you are looking for, then snag a bite and a coffee and head upstairs for free Wi-Fi and a quiet place to do work or lay back.

For dinner, grab a cold beer, cocktail or a glass of wine and join us upstairs for seasonally driven starters and dinner plates. In true London fashion, we have a variety of house-made curries, pastas, meat and seafood plates. Our menu is always changing, and our dishes are prepared depending on what’s fresh that day. Check out the blackboard for daily specials. Cocktails served late.

Long day at the office? No worries. Duke’s has business catering! Leave the work to us. Call in your order or set up a delivery schedule and we will happily deliver.

The grocery table will feature a selection of fresh produce from selected local farmers. No need to wait until the weekend for the farmers market to get your fresh fruits and vegetables.
