Thanks to all who messaged about Capa Tosta’s imminent opening:

“At Capa Tosta we bring together an eclectic array of flavors and ingredients, all tied together by their strong cultural heritage. When you walk through the doors at Capa Tosta it is a wonderful fusion of the classic and the modern, from the decor to the food. To the left, an elegant dining room, and to the right, the modern lounge. When it comes to the food, it means a fusion of the rich cultural history of the dish, and the fresh spin Capa Tosta provides each plate.” (more…)

Thanks to Nicole for sending yesterday: “y’all seen these alpacas wandering the streets of Columbia Heights?!”

Our last sighting of these beauties was January 31st, in the snow.

Frank Lucas : “Ey, ey, ey, ey! Don’t rub on that. You Blot that! Ya understand? That’s Alpaca. That’s $25,000 Alpaca! You blot that shit! You don’t rub it, put the club soda on there.”

“Dear PoPville,

I had a weird moment exiting Meridian Hill Park – I left by the northeast exit, which spills onto the bike lane on 15th St. There is a pedestrian crosswalk at that spot so, after looking south and determining I wasn’t stepping in front of a car, I proceeded to cross.

The light at 15th and Euclid was green, but the oncoming traffic had plenty of time to react to my crossing. Instead, however, the oncoming car sped up and didn’t slow down until I was in the middle of the intersection – clearly they intended to speed by me and make the light. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to bring attention to a “couple” (I do not believe they are actually together) running a fairly obvious scam, the first which I was pulled into late summer and then again this past Saturday. Both times they flagged me down on 11th street NW near Cardozo HS. The pair are a late 40’s couple who do not look unhoused but still in rather rough shape (especially the woman). Last summer I was biking home (I live in the area) and he flagged me down – “hey neighbor – [insert phrase]” and then told me him and his wife just got their first apartment in the area, for the first time ever, and after receiving a housing voucher couldn’t get the keys, also saying that people had used racist slurs and were generally unwelcome (the story is sad and rather lengthy) and ended with an ask for $20 for … something (bus fare? getting in? I can’t remember). He asked for the money in cash or the cash app. I didn’t have either and when I went to break off our interaction he got rather agitated (we’re desperate! please help a neighbor! then even yelled some curse words as I rode off on my bike). I knew then it was likely a scam but I still really felt for them. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I was scootering north (in the bike lane/not on the sidewalk or in the street) and was going through the crosswalk on the east side of 14th st. NW when I was hit by a car that didn’t yield on a green light to turn left on Florida Ave while traveling south on 14th st nw at roughly 6:10pm on Sunday 4/4. There was a super kind woman who saw everything across the street and helped me out but I didn’t get her info because I was just so embarrassed and in shock. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I have lived in DC for 9 years and Columbia Heights for 6 years, and I love the community we have. I need your help identifying a sexual predator I was surprised to find on my (basement level) patio last night, at approximately 11:40pm. This transpired in the alley between Holmead and 13th St NW, between Otis and Monroe.

I looked out my bedroom window to notice the motion light had been activated, and when I looked more closely I saw a man with no pants on, (more…)

Last night around 1am a few folks started asking “Am I the only one who had their entire building shake like an earthquake? (13th and Clifton)”

“I live here too. Yea, it kinda scared me and my gf. Whole building shook.”

Daniel replies: “Huge tree fell in the Clifton Terrace/Wardman courtyard. Assume that was what you heard/felt.”
