When it rains scuttlebutt it pours scuttlebutt! Another source with an incredibly high percentage of being right tells me that one of DC’s Wawa is coming to the space between Fado and Starbucks in Chinatown. S/He also confirms that one is coming to the former Tortilla Coast space in Logan Circle. They will join the one coming to 19th Street in the former City Sports space. And I got one more for ya too – STAY TUNED.

Sara reports just after 12pm: “Smoke at the FBI building! My colleague joked, “maybe this means they picked a new director.”

Hopefully, something very minor – in which case “maybe this means they picked a new director” is freaking hilarious. Updates if it something more concerning.

Looks like the Andresification of Penn Quarter continues full steam ahead with PEPE Spanish Sandwiches. A reader reports the sign is “facing the Navy Memorial, in the building that 701 restaurant is in, where the native foods place was.”

Ed. Note: We judged Andres’ PEPE Food Truck here. Updates if it’s also becoming a brick and mortar. Stay tuned.

Erin reports at 9:15am: “7th Street completely blocked from E to F. There are hazardous waste crews on the scene and a strong smell of burning rubber.”

Updates when more is known.

A liquor license application has been filed for Karma Modern Indian at 611 I Street, NW:

“New Restaurant that will offer Indian cuisine, primarily modern renditions of North Indian cuisine. Total Occupancy Load of 200 and a Summer Garden with seating for 30.”

Stay tuned.

We admired their look a couple weeks ago. Who knew?!?

From the Downtown DC BID:

“Waste receptacles equipped with sensors were installed this month in Chinatown and are being installed in Anacostia as part of a DowntownDC Business Improvement District (BID), Anacostia Business Improvement District (ABID) and D.C. Government pilot to explore innovative waste management solutions in the District to influence maintenance programs across the country.

A total of 34 new, red Victor Stanley Relay™ Sensor and Service smart waste receptacles have been installed in the Chinatown neighborhood along several streets including H, 7th, 6th and I streets NW, in a pilot in partnership between the BID, the Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (MOAPIA), the Department of Housing and Community Development (DCHD) and with funding support from D.C.’s local soft drink companies and the American Beverage Association.

The Chinatown pilot cans are easily distinguishable. Each red can features brightly-colored Chinese-themed motifs on the lids and on a side plaque, which displays a Chinese dragon. Each can is outfitted with a smart sensor to monitor fill levels and send alerts when service is required.

The DowntownDC BID is simultaneously supporting a similar pilot in Anacostia where 53 waste bins with sensors are being installed. (more…)
