Back in January we shared some scuttlebutt that MacIntyre’s (an Irish bar) would be replacing Taste of India in Woodley Park. Eater DC now confirms:

“The team behind Maddy’s and Maddy’s Tap Room are looking to open Macintyre’s in Woodley Park this fall.”

They say there will be 14 beers on draft and seven 60 inch plasma televisions. Updates when they get closer to opening.

From the National Zoo:

“After carefully monitoring the behavior of both its giant pandas and female Mei Xiang’s hormones for weeks, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute’s team of reproductive scientists, veterinarians and panda keepers performed two artificial inseminations within the last 24 hours. The first procedure started at 6 p.m. on April 26, and the second began at 7:30 this morning, April 27. Daily hormone reports showed Mei Xiang’s progesterone levels peaked Sunday morning, an indication that she was in estrus and able to become pregnant.

For the first time this year, scientists used semen collected from a giant panda living at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Wolong, China. The chosen male panda, Hui Hui (pronounced “h-WEI h-WEI”), was determined to be one of the best genetic matches for Mei Xiang.

Although the Zoo’s male panda Tian Tian is not as genetically valuable as Mei Xiang, he is still important to the panda population. Scientists also used high-quality fresh semen collected from Tian Tian for the artificial inseminations. The first procedure used a combination of sperm from Hui Hui and Tian Tian. The second procedure also used thawed sperm from Hui Hui and sperm refrigerated overnight from Tian Tian. If Mei Xiang gives birth, scientists will use a DNA test to determine which male sired the cub. Mei Xiang was put under general anesthesia for the non-surgical artificial insemination(s). Each procedure took about an hour. The Zoo live-streamed portions of the first procedure on Twitter using Perioscope and live-posted to Instagram using #PandaStory. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I walked by the old Murphy’s in Woodley Park tonight and it looked pretty bleak. Do you know of any updates for the restaurant that was supposed to open there?”

Back in Jan. we noted there was a fire at the future Bar Civita, fortunately, mostly contained to the front/patio area. Not seen in the photo above is the major progress done inside. In February their Facebook page notes “Moving forward…finalizing menu items! We’re getting excited!” and via email owner Liam Civita tells me he is aiming for an April opening. Stay tuned.

“Red Line: Woodley Park station is temporarily closed due to fire department investigation. Bus service has been requested.”

Then

“Red Line: Woodley Park station has re-opened.”

@m1192849 tweeted us the photo above just after 12:30:

“Serious activity at woodley park. @PoPville”

@jgohringer tweets us the photo inside Woodley Park metro below:

“@m1192849 @PoPville they evacuated the station a while ago.”

Thanks to a reader for sending these devastating photos Saturday morning from a fire in the former Murphy’s/future Bar Civita [“A modern American and Italian influenced restaurant in historic Woodley Park in Washington, D.C.“]. I’ve sent an email to the Bar Civita folks and will update when I hear back. Hopefully it won’t push the planned opening too far back.

Good update from owner Liam Civita:

“It is definitely an unfortunate setback, but it is only a setback. It will delay opening but not by much, as a majority of the damage was on the patio which we were replacing anyways in a couple of weeks. The fire department did a tremendous job in controlling and putting out the fire.”

From an email:

“DC’s first cakepoppery is officially open for business!

To start, we’ll be open from 10am to 7pm daily (closed Mondays), and we’re working out additional morning hours on weekends. We’re still learning the ropes and waiting for a few more pieces of furniture, but the store is beautiful and I hope you’ll love it as much as I do.

We’re planning a Grand Opening celebration in a couple of months, once the weather is nicer and the sidewalk construction has been completed. There’s no need to wait for the party to come say hi and to check out our cakepops and other delicious treats like black & white cookies, rugelach, raspberry bars, and more. And yes, there will also be bagels very soon!”

A tipster sends word about the recently closed Taste of India:

“With the recent closure of Murphy’s of DC leaving us bereft, there’s a wee bit o’ sunshine on the horizon. While nothing will replace Murphy’s, particularly with it’s roaring fireplace on nights like this, “Taste of India” closed a couple of weeks ago and the folks who own Maddy’s are turning the space into … an Irish bar. Rumor is that the new space will be named “McIntyre’s” and is slated to open “sometime in March”.”

Ed. Note: Maddy’s currently has located in Dupont at 1726 Connecticut Ave. NW and at 13th and L St, NW.

In November we learned Murphy’s was closing after almost 30 years in Woodley Park and would be replaced by Italian restaurant Bar Civita.
