From a press release:

“Known for its locally-distilled single malt and rye whiskies, Virginia’s Copper Fox Distillery is expanding into the gin market with its newest product, Vir Gin, launching with a tasting party at U Street’s Vinoteca on Thursday, November 7. Copper Fox owner Rick Wasmund will be on-site from 6-8pm, pouring complimentary tastes of the new gin, while Vinoteca’s mixologist Horus Alvarez will serve up four signature “Vir” Gin cocktails ranging from the classic Aviation to the Gin Rickey, all discounted to $7 for the evening.

Distilled nearby in Sperryville, VA, Vir Gin is Copper Fox’s first non-whisky product and will feature the distinct flavors of Mediterranean juniper, citrus, spice and selected botanicals. Vir Gin is handcrafted from 100% malted barley, tastefully distilled in pot stills resulting in a deep and rich flavor foundation that allows the malt to shine. Though this party will launch the brand’s first batch, seasonal offerings from the distillery garden will uniquely influence each subsequent small batch they produce.”

1515 U Street, NW

RCKNDY Home/Office furnishing store closed at 1515 U St, NW back in March 2011. I’ve been super curious to see who would take over the space ever since. It’s going to become Primp Beauty Bar and Salon. I spoke with the owner (who was super nice) who said the store will open in two phases. In December Primp Beauty Bar will open focusing on retail and they will stock any hair/beauty products you’d like if you don’t see it on the shelves. The second phase will come in February when they add the salon part. Stay tuned for an exact opening date when it’s known.

More big news for the 14th Street corridor. I hear from a very good source that the owners of Federal and Palace5ive (2216 14th St, NW) are opening a neighborhood tavern in the former Dynasty Ethiopian Restaurant space. The space is located right between Piola and JUDY restaurant just south of Florida Ave. Word is that it will be a very chill spot with beer in cans. More info when it becomes available.

The building soon to be home of Amsterdam Falafel on 14th Street is starting to look good (I admit I will still miss the old mural.) Amazing what a new coat of paint can do:

Amsterdam Falafel has also applied for a liquor license at this location which says:

“New restaurant serving falafel and related foods, no entertainment, no dancing. Seating capacity is 45. Total occupancy load is 59.

Hours of operation will be Sunday and Monday 10am-12am; Tuesday and Wednesday 10am-2:30am; Thursday 10am-3am and Friday & Saturday 10am-4am.

Thanks to a reader for sending word about Diego reopening at 14th and V St, NW:

“looks like Diego is back open and had a pretty packed house when I walked by at around 9 last night.”

10th and V Street, NW

“Dear PoPville,

I almost wrecked my car when I saw this just now. I asked one of the workers what was happening and he said they were “installing some new windows to respond to concerns from the community.”

This community member is sincerely grateful for it. SORG should get credit when deserved; they’ve certainly gotten much deserved criticism over the years for this property. I’m hoping there will be some lighting to go with it, but this is a huge, if principally cosmetic step. I wish SORG would engage with the community. They’d have a lot more friends in the neighborhood if they did.

Other neighbors have spoken to other workers and have been told that they are starting on a condo project, not just installing windows on the ” target=”_blank”> church at 10th and V. Either way, it’s great to see progress.”
