Short Articles about Long Meetings shares the news:

“A committee of Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 1B/U Street voted December 16 to endorse the request for zoning variances necessary for the establishment of a day-care service for dogs on the first floor of a mixed-use building at the corner of 14th Street and Florida Avenue NW. The recommendation of the Design Review Committee will now go to the full ANC for consideration at the next meeting in January.”

Newtown Kitchen & Bar opened up last night in the former Tabaq space at 1336 U St, NW.

“Our seasonal menu showcases market dishes by Chef / Owner Howsoon H.O. Cham crafted from ingredients supplied by local farmers, fishermen & meat ranchers from Frederick Maryland to West Virginia. Master Mixologist Seembad Jaudally of Ciroc Nation created one of U Street’s most distinctive and fresh bar program to compliment the restaurant’s modern concept.”

“Dear PoPville,

Last Saturday my girlfriend’s car was broken into and my computer and car keys were stolen which were in a backpack in the trunk from 11th and T NW. A quicksilver blue/white backpack with a brown/tan patch. Inside had my MacBook air [Serial number C02GFWV6DjWT ], car keys, headphones and law school outlines.

I am in law school at UDC Law and this computer had everything for law school finals which were last week and this week. I made a police report, have been trying to locate via Find my mac device etc. but having no luck.

Then the other day I received an email from Apple stating that an erase was pending but on “Romex’s laptop” which was still showing up in my find my device application as it is really my computer.

I sent a message and a lock request with my number.

I just wanted to reach out to the community to see if anyone, possibly may have some information on a macbook air that was stolen.

My email is davebilodeau(at)yahoo.com
Cell is 518-301-0111.”

Here’s a rendering from Perseus Realty who add:

“1728 14th Street is a 35,000 square foot mixed use office and retail project located in the heart of Washington’s cultural epicenter, the 14th St corridor. Perseus Realty partnered with Ogden Capital to acquire an existing warehouse and adaptively reuse it to meet growing demand for goods and services retail and boutique office space in this corridor. The current design anticipates the first two floors as retail space with two floors of office space above. Construction is scheduled to begin by the first quarter of 2013 and will be completed by the first quarter of 2014.”

“Dear PoPville,

Many people on PoPville have talked about their love of The Greek Spot, on 11th St. What many people probably don’t know is that the owner, Greg Kavadias, has been home recovering from major surgery to remove a very large brain tumor. Thankfully he is doing well, but the medical bills associated with the surgery are incredibly high and putting a huge burden on he, his wife, and their two young boys.

Greg is a great friend, and has been a huge part of the DC community for years. We are throwing an event in his honor, on Saturday January 4th, at U Street Music Hall. Tickets are only $10, and ALL of the door proceeds are being given to Greg and his family to help offset the medical debt they incurred. We would love to have the support of the DC folks who frequent The Greek Spot, whether they know Greg personally or not. This will be an amazing night of music and friendship and we really want to SPREAD THE WORD and have this event sell out!!”

You can purchase tickets here.

On Friday afternoon I was excited to learn that Trader Joes had applied for a liquor license at the store they hope to open in February on 14th Street between T and U. This store will be open Sunday through Saturday 8 am – 10 pm. A reader asked if they’d be able to sell liquor too like Costco does. No liquor for Trader Joes – they’ve applied for a class B license which allows for beer and wine only. I stopped in the Foggy Bottom location of Trader Joes and was happy to see that they have a huge selection of beer and wine (and champagne):

hen walk

“Dear PoPville,

Odd happening this morning at my home at 15th & V next to St Augustine’s Church. A smile anyway. Woke up to a live hen in my front yard today, yes, in busy downtown Washington, DC. Animal control came and was very gentle. On the 3rd Day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…”
