assault

A reader reports:

“I witnessed what I believe to be a sexual assault at 15th & T Sts NW today at approx 8:30am. I was traveling northbound on 15th St stopped at the light for T St NW. A woman was crossing 15th, heading east on the north crosswalk. As she finished crossing and stepped up onto the curb, a man standing on that corner, reached out and down with his right arm and touched/grabbed her front private area. She was visibly surprised, pulled out her headphones and started screaming expletives (I assume, I think I saw a F*** you mouthed) at him. He, without batting an eye or acknowledging her screaming, casually crossed 15th St and then turned southbound on the west side of 15th. (more…)

hawk

A reader reports:

“Time for a bigger bird house.

Spotted this morning in the alley at 10th and U NW, with a rat in her talons. Glad to see she discovered our abundant food supply and I really hope she sticks around. To quote my neighbor, “finally getting some competent help with rat abatement.”

Got a good view too, as she was down low on the fence about 10 feet away, still thrashing her prey. Great start to the week!”

pizza

From an email:

“‘Pizza Jawn’ Comes to DC with Marjorie Meek-Bradley

· A Jawn? A Philly slang term basically used to describe any single person, place or thing. But in this instance, it means a super awesome exclusive guest chef pizza collaboration available for a limited time.

· TODAY, Marjorie Meek-Bradley will be in Pizzeria Vetri slinging pie with Marc Vetri and announcing her guest chef creation, the DC Rising prepared with roasted peppers and onions, cheddar and jack cheese, half smoke and crispy shallot rings – which will be available 1/5-1/15.”

So, half smoke on a pizza – yes or no? I am intrigued!

colada-sign
1405 T Street, NW

Thanks to Jonathan Pinkerton for sending shots of the new signage. They open January 26th. For those not familiar with the Colada Shop:

“Named after the iconic Cuban-style coffee, Colada Shop is a concept that blends together the contemporary lifestyle of Washingtonians with the Cuban tradition of starting and ending the day. Paying homage to the Caribbean way of coffee, food, cocktails and social lifestyle, Colada Shop will be a casual café and eatery where guests come for the quality and stay for the company.

Colada Shop takes its name from one of Cuba’s quintessential coffees, the Colada, which is 4oz of Cuban- style espresso traditionally served in a Styrofoam cup along with small, plastic demitasses. Its takeaway form is meant to be shared. Sharing a colada remains a prominent social and cultural activity and is customary of workplace breaks in Cuban communities.” (more…)

“I was hit by an Uber driver in the bikelane/crosswalk at 9:15am this morning, January 3, at the corner of 14th and V, NW. If you have a camera pointed at that intersection (say from Union Row or Langston Lofts) or witnessed the accident and got a look at the make/model of the car and/or license plate, I would really appreciate you contacting me. The Uber was a black four door car and the driver was a black male in his 50s and I was wearing a yellow and black jacket, black pants, orange helmet and a white bicycle. Luckily I am ok but I was too shaken at the time to get his license plate. Thank you.”

florida-avenue-grill
11th and Florida Ave, NW

On Friday we learned that the famed Florida Avenue Grill property would be sold at auction on Wednesday January 18, 2017. They were packed on New Years and their last Facebook post makes no mention of the auction:

Another reader notes:

“I was trying to figure out what was going on with the Fla Ave Grill and came across a 2009 NYT article on the owner, seems its not his first brush with this.”

We will obviously update with any news on what happens Wednesday January 18th.

And in other Florida Avenue Grill memories. Another reader notes:

“…I just watched D.C. Cab on HBO go for the first time in about 15 years and there are pretty extended scenes shot in what looks to be the actual interior of the grill. Also there are pretty amazing exterior shots as well. They also show National Airport, embassy row, U street and what looks like may have been Chinatown or Union Market area. The final scene is a parade outside of the “District Building” starring the Cardozo Marching Band. It’s all topped off with a special thanks to D.C. And Mayor Barry. I highly recommend the cult classic!”
