Dribble, dribble – water cannon:

“Chef Ryan Ratino is proud to announce the opening of his first restaurant in Washington, D.C., Bresca, a concept born out of his passion for the bounties of earth and years of studying European cooking techniques.

Bresca is inspired by the European movement of “bistronomy”, (a combination of the words Bistro and Gastronomy). The trend is characterized by a more vibrant, experimental and informal approach to cooking than traditional French cuisine. It is a simple style with the focus being the food, its bold flavors and the feelings that these combinations evoke.

An Ohio native, Chef Ratino has cooked in some of the most lauded restaurants in the country. (more…)

Well this is huge. Thanks to Grant for spotting this update on Bresca coming to the 1st floor of Policy at 14th and T Street, NW. In today’s Tom Sietsma chat in the Post he says:

“On a more delicious note, Ripple’s last chef, Ryan Ratino, tells me he plans to open a place of his own, Bresca, at 1906 14th St NW in September. He’ll be weaving aspects of fine-dining with a casual approach…Bresca’s drinks program will be created by the esteemed Juan Coronado, late of Barmini.”

STAY TUNED.

A crazy day of closures concludes with another abrupt one – Policy closing the downstairs space. UPDATE: Policy will be “consolidating upstairs”.

Policy comments:

“We have been open since 2009 and do not plan on going anywhere anytime soon. We will continue making great memories! We were closed for renovation but will be open on Wednesday. You can join us in our Lounge!”

Thanks to Josh for sending. STAY TUNED.

From the Dupont Circle Listserv:

Gun battle – alley behind 1500 block of U Street and 1500 block of Caroline Street

When: Saturday July 8, 2017, just after 1:00 am.

According to different verbal reports from MPD, as many as 60 rounds may have been fired, with various calibers possibly suggesting three guns. Neighbors report bullets in at least two residences facing 16th Street NW. Multiple vehicles hit, with windows shot out; one vehicle had 6 to 8 bullet holes. Some blood reported in alley but apparently no victims and no suspects arrested. Police were on the scene for over 12 hours but so far no official comments from MPD: only an under investigation email reply.

913 U Street, NW

From a press release:

“It’s time to dust off the wigs and turn out for a good cause. Thursday, July 13th from 5 to 8 pm, Sick Cells and The Dirty Goose will be hosting a fundraiser and awareness event for sickle cell disease (SCD). The event, taking place at 913 U Street NW, will include a fashion show by fashion designer, wig enthusiast, and an adult living with SCD, Tristan Lee. There will appearances by DC Drag Queen, Miss Labella Mafia, and local chef and foodie Renny Vonne. The event will also include have a raffle (see some of the prizes below).

Tristan is a model, actor, poet, and fashion designer. He was diagnosed with SCD at six months old and suffered a stroke when he was 9. He made an 80% recovery but used the stroke as an inspiration to start acting. In his words, “if people were going to look at me, I might as well give them something to look at.”

Tristan’s fashion line, Divo Star, is designed to raise awareness about SCD. During the event, Tristan will present 10 gender neutral looks from his collection. His pieces include summer denim rompers and overalls worn by men and women. We’ll also have a Q&A session, lead by Morenike Ayo-Vonne, to Tristan about his life with SCD.

Wiggin Out For Sickle Cell has worked with DC establishments for raffle prizes. We listed some of our favorite prizes below: (more…)

Thanks to Michelle for sending the photo above from 15th and T Street, NW: “Seen this morning, not sure what happened here but part of 15th street is blocked off.”

Not clear if related but another reader reports:

“Any word as to why 14th St outside of Trader Joe’s was closed this morning? I was walking to work around 7:30 am and both 14th St and 15th St were closed off with lots of police activity. I also heard the bomb squad was there.”

And another reader also asks:

“What’s happening down on 14th between T and U, road has been blocked off for about an hour with no one allowed to even cross on the sidewalks?”

From MPD:

“On July 4th at approximately 11:10 p.m. a juvenile victim received a gunshot wound to the shoulder. The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment with nonlife threating injuries.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call 202-727-9099 or text 50411. Thank you.”

Florida Ave just east of 14th Street, NW

Right behind that cool little bridge behind La Colombe in the Manhattan Laundry building:

The liquor license placard for Maydan says:

“New Class “C” Tavern serving Middle Eastern food and offering alcoholic beverages. Total Occupancy Load of 135. Offering Live Entertainment.”

Also a reader writes:

“I follow the chefs of Compass and Maydan on Instagram. They are doing this crazy ass trip to Morroco, Lebanon, and Marrakesh to explore food for their new restaurant, Maydan. I’ve been watching their live feeds and photos since the trip started a few days ago, and, needless to say, it’s pretty fucking cool. If the food for their new restaurant is anything similar to their trip, DC is in for quite a culinary treat. I thought some other Washingtonians might want to know about it! Their instagrams are @maydandc @cmorgasbord @gmladdison.”
