“U Street Music Hall is thrilled to announce its weeklong lineup of 10 shows in celebration of the acclaimed venue’s eight-year anniversary. From March 11-18, U Street Music Hall will present artists spanning genres from electronic and dance to hip-hop to homegrown genres like go-go and moombahton, at three venues across the city.

Anniversary Week kicks off at U Street Music Hall Sunday, March 11 with legendary D.C. go-go band Trouble Funk performing as part of U Hall’s ongoing “Go-Go Returns to U Street” series. DMV-native MC and producer Oddisee, whose live performances have earned him rave reviews around the world, plays U Hall on the second night of Anniversary Week in support of his lauded new album, The Iceberg. Well this is terrible news:

A Message From Funk Parade

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that Funk Parade will most likely not be happening in 2018. Despite an early organizing start, hundreds of hours of work and team planning, our financial situation for the 2018 event is worse than it has ever been. As it sits now, there is very little chance of raising the amount needed to put on this event in the 10 weeks we have left.

We will announce an official decision in the next few days. We wanted to inform the community now because our annual kickoff event is happening Wednesday March 7, and we could not go into it without being transparent regarding the event’s situation.

As the event has grown in popularity and size, its costs have increased beyond the community’s ability to fund it. While support from the community has remained strong, small-dollar donations from residents and local businesses are not enough to meet the event’s budget. Funk Parade has come to rely increasingly on larger contributions and sponsorships to cover what individuals and local businesses cannot.

Unfortunately, the vision of the event is at odds with what many larger sponsors say they want, and some don’t see the point of the event at all. (more…)

NOT the dog in question just a stock photo of Leashing up a brindle pup by kellybdc

“Dear PoPville,

Just a quick head’s up on the off-leash brindle story from last Wednesday.

Sunday night around 7 pm, I saw a verbal altercation between two owners after an off-leash brindle appeared to nip his dog.

I had an inclining this may be the same dog a previously reader wrote in about. What was confusing is the brindle owner HAD a leash in his possession, only putting it on to after the pup almost got into street traffic.

The nipped dog appeared to be okay as they walked away, but I called 311-not only was this off-leash dog at risk and putting cars/pedestrians/others risk, the owner appeared pretty volatile. As with most nights, it was pretty crowded on this corner with dogs, kids, cars, etc. Keep your eyes peeled.”

“Dear PoPville,

Thursday morning (around 7:35am) a random jerk was cursing at me repeatedly at the U St. metro station (apparently, he didn’t approve of me running with my 3-year old in a stroller) and he actually followed me to continue to yell and curse at me. A kind gentleman blocked him from getting on the same train car as me and my child and told him repeatedly to just leave me alone and walk away. (more…)

photos from the files of DC’s Office of Zoning

The historical preservation and zoning relief necessary to build an eight-story, 242-unit apartment building at 2122 14th Street NW (between V and W Streets) received endorsement from a committee of Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 1B/U Street on February 20. ANC1B’s Zoning, Preservation and Development Committee heard a presentation of a revised design by the developers of the long-time site of Martha’s Table, and then heard objections from members of the community. “Dear PoPville,

Last evening my husband was walking our dog at 5:45pm right past the gas station at 14th & W Streets NW. Two women with short hair were walking a large black dog with some brindle coloring. They let their dog off of its leash and it charged my husband and our dog (a corgi). It immediately went for our dog’s throat and while my husband was able to tackle it off of our dog he broke his finger and sustained a bite. He’s on his way to the ER and the finger injury will obviously impact his work. He was in such a panic over whether or not our dog was hurt (she is relatively okay) and in pain himself that he didn’t get their information before they fled. He says there were lots of witnesses because of the time of day and nice weather. If anyone has a picture or video, we would love to obtain it so this doesn’t happen to others. Thanks.”

Ed. Note: If there are any witnesses please email [email protected] and I’ll put you in touch with OP.

1940 11th Street, NW next to Solly’s just south of U Street

Thanks to a reader for passing along this nice little tidbit from a DC Bocce League registration email:

“**Vinoteca has plans to close in March to completely renovate the interior restaurant. Included in the plans is the installation of a retractable glass roof over the outdoor patio. This roof will ensure weather will no longer be an issue during games. Once Vinoteca finalizes their construction timeline, we will open registration.”

Vinoteca opened back in 2007. Updates as more is known on the renovation plans.

The liquor license placard for Archipelago says:

“Applicant requests to expand the business into the second floor of the building, thus increasing the Total Occupancy Load of the premises from 94 to 166, and increasing seating from 88 to 148.

I thought they already had a second floor? Stay tuned.
