bourbon coffee
4200 Wisconsin Ave, NW

Tenleytown is on a roll, relatively. Next up is Bourbon Coffee coming to the corner of Wisconsin and Veazey St, NW next to the Sullivan’s Toy Store. I’m told they could open up as early as this week if all goes well. Bourbon Coffee currently has locations in Foggy Bottom and on Capitol Hill.

Their website says:

“Bourbon Coffee first opened its doors in Kigali, Rwanda in 2007, and has expanded to eight different locations across Rwanda and the United States. We are an international brand of specialty coffee, and the first retail brand to originate from Africa. Our stores are built around the philosophy of producing coffee from “crop to cup” – while sharing our coffee with the world, we are also promoting sustainable practices, economic development, cultural unity, and helping to reshape the global image of Rwanda and its economic development and culture.”

Awesome – and a great addition to the neighborhood.

Jose Andres’ Beefsteak is adding a third location in Tenleytown following openings in Foggy Bottom and Dupont. Eater DC reports the Tenleytown location should open in March at 4531 Wisconsin Avenue, NW. And from the world of highly reliable scuttlebutt – a very good source tells me that a fourth Beefsteak is very likely coming to 600 Mass Ave, NW by Mount Vernon Square. Updates when/if confirmed. Check out the menus here.

From a press release [3950 Chesapeake St, NW]:

“Incident at Wilson
December 1, 2015

Dear members of the Wilson High School Community,

At Wilson High School, we highly value and are committed to fostering a learning environment where students feel safe and secure. We also want to clearly communicate with parents about safety issues when they arise.

This is to alert you that at around 1:15 pm a gun was discovered in a student’s bookbag. The gun has been surrendered to police, and the student is being detained. At this time there is no immediate threat to the school. All students are safe. We will share additional details with you as appropriate.

I want to assure you that the safety of all Wilson High School students is one of our top priorities, and we remain committed to ensuring that your students are safe.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this incident or safety and security at our school, please feel free to contact me. Thank you again for your cooperation and support.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Martin

Principal, Wilson High School”

Earlier this month Tenleytown DC reported:

“Chick-fil-A has filed for a construction permit with the District Department of Transportation for the former Payless ShoeSource storefront at 4505 Wisconsin Avenue.”

Of course not without a fight

“Do parents want their kids at nearby schools-Janney, Wilson, and Deal to be eating this at such an early age? Chick-fil-A, a popular chain among young adults and teens will just cause students at these schools to be unhealthy. There are numerous studies stating the more fast food kids eat as children, the more likely they are to continue these unhealthy eating habits through adulthood.”

Tenleytown DC shared the sad news last week:

“Murasaki Japanese Cuisine and Sushi Bar has closed its doors for good after nearly 14 years in the neighborhood.

It turns out Sushi Story LLC, which owns and operates Murasaki, has been facing financial difficulties for quite some time.”

Updates when we learn who takes over the space.

And a reader on twitter echoes a sentiment I often feel – bring back Morty’s (Krupins)!!! Incidentally, still waiting to see who moves into Morty’s

In November 2013 anti-artisan, bacon and egg lovers nearly had a heart attack, understandably, when word came out that Steak ‘n Egg would likely be closed for up to two years for renovations. Tenleytown DC updates with good news:

“Steak-N-Egg’s many loyal patrons will be pleased to know that the scaled back renovation means the diner will not close for any extended period. As the two-story properties at 4702 and 4704 Wisconsin Avenue are not currently connected to Steak-N-Egg, the restaurant can remain open during their renovation, maintaining its normal 24/7 operations.”

New plans still include an expansion:

A reader reports:

“Called the store and they confirmed–“we are closing our stores, probably by the first week in December.”

From Hudson Trail Outfitters CEO:

It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that after nearly fifty (50) years in business, HTO will be closing its remaining four stores and shutting down the business.

HTO has been an institution in the DC Metro Area since 1971. From day one the mission was simple: open a store that sells the greatest outdoor gear and apparel on the planet, hire only those who love the outdoors and who are passionate about health and happiness, and provide Positively Outrageous Customer Service to everyone. The retail landscape has changed so much within the last 36 months and the Company has decided that the time has come to begin to ‘wind down’ all company affairs, knowing that it never had to compromise any excellence standards on behalf of the community.

The community and the Company have always supported each other with such dignity and respect, and the Company will always be proud of the role that it played in helping to improve the lives of literally hundreds of thousands of people, employees and customers, within the DC Metro Area. During this transition, all customers and all employees can count on continued excellence and pride from all associations with the Company. HTO firmly believes that an orderly wind-down of affairs provides the best opportunity for professional closure and maximum success and efficiency in what are otherwise sad and nostalgic circumstances.

The Company wishes to thank all of its customers and team members (past and present) for nearly five (5) decades of committed loyalty, high standards, professionalism, association, trust, support, partnership…and most importantly…. friendship. And what a ride it has been – who would have ever imagined that Ground Zero for what is now internationally known as Specialty Active Outdoor Retail was going to be Kensington, Maryland, or, that a passionate and creative outdoorsman from Washington, DC would one day grow up to both pioneer an entire industry, and, to become the example and trend setter for how that industry would grow and evolve for nearly half of a century?

In advance, thank you for your continued support during this transition.

A reader reports:

“I spotted this US Government van on the NW spoke of Ward Circle, just outside AU’s main campus. He flew around the circle, jumped the curb, and parked smack in the middle of the crosswalk as pedestrians were about to cross from either side. Ward Circle is dangerous enough for pedestrians (Those “DC Law | Stop for Pedestrians Within Crosswalk” signs only get people killed, as we saw a couple weeks ago on Wisconsin Ave), and this guy decided to park on one of the main crosswalks leading to the AU campus.”
