Chick Fil A, Beefsteak, Bourbon Coffee and now District Taco coming to Tenleytown too

Tenleytown continues to dominate the fast casual food market. Yesterday the Washington Post had a great profile on the founder of District Taco and towards the end revealed this little tidbit:

“Next up are restaurants in Skyline and Tenleytown.”

I emailed Osiris and he tells me that if all goes well the Tenleytown location should be open in 5-6 months!! And it’s coming to Wisconsin Ave and Brandywine St in the brand new Tenley View development.

You can see District Taco’s menu here. Updates as they get closer to opening.

  • Epic Fail

As someone who lives in Tenleytown I guess I have a mixed reaction to this news. On the one hand, I’m happy that some of the empty retail spaces are going to be finally filled, however I’m not sure that I’m thrilled with the idea of Tenleytown becoming the epicenter of fast casual dining. It seems a shame that there are so few nice sit down restaurants in the neighborhood (Masala Art is probably the neighborhood’s only true destination restaurant – I can’t think of any others that people drive across town to visit).

I think this is good all around. I usually struggle to find something to eat when I’m up that way that isn’t Pete’s or Cava grill. And that corner has been down and out for a long time.

  • I’ve never eaten at District Taco but I’m really glad some blank holes are being filled in Tenleytown. The whole casual dining epicenter thing is a bit weird but it’s better than macdonald’s and at least it puts bodies on the street. There are plenty of empty retail spaces left for those hoping for other options – at Van Ness, the former HTO site at Brandywine and the just-closed sushi restaurant a half block down from there.

I assume that the soon-to-be opened AU law school is influencing some of this this, along with the forthcoming additional students from GDS and Sidwell once those schools finish their expansions. Many of the new students will be too young to be consumers but their families are a target audience.

I for one am very excited about District Taco coming to Tenley! I might have to reconsider my bus route so I can get breakfast tacos everyday!

I can’t help but think Tenley is a great destination for fast casual restaurants because of American University students and to a lesser extent, Wilson students. I would have loved to have all those options while I was at AU!
