“My 18-year-old cat has been missing since Saturday morning. She was spotted two streets down and someone called animal control, but animal control did not take her into custody. She should still be in our South Four Corners neighborhood, which is close to Holy Cross Hospital and Sligo Creek Park. I’ve had her since high school, and I’m devastated by her disappearance.

Details – Black, orange, and white calico. She’s about 5 lbs, has a little black “beauty mark” by her nose, and a white belly. Arthritic hind legs and deaf – once again, she’s very old for a cat.”

“I recently stayed at the Double Tree motel in Silver Spring, MD and this peregrine falcon is nesting right outside the window on the 12th floor and currently has 4 eggs. It was a treat to observe this beautiful creature up close for the 4 days that I was there. I mentioned it at the front desk–they knew about the falcon but were unaware of the eggs.”

“This past Thursday, an explosion and fire broke out at the Flower Branch Apartments complex in Silver Spring. More than 30 people were injured, including three firefighters, and nearly 100 people were forced from their homes. Among those evacuated were two of our Silver Spring team members.

The Red Cross was immediately on the scene, setting up a shelter a few blocks away for a safe place where families could reconnect with one another. They provided beds, food, counselors, and caseworkers for all of the victims.

Before World War II, experts dismissed sharks as a serious threat to service members. Then in 1942, the U.S. Navy received reports about horrific attacks on castaways adrift from sunken ships and downed airplanes. Many of these reports proved to be true. Soon after the war, diving pioneers sought out sharks, expecting the worst because of the shark attack stories. Instead, they found an animal less to be feared than understood. Join Robert Cantrell, filmmaker and shark researcher for a presentation on the history of shark attacks and how the “fear of sharks” impacted the Navy’s policy in World War II as well as present-day knowledge of sharks.
