“Jackie’s Restaurant, a Silver Spring institution for over 11 years, plans to close on or about March 31, 2016. Opened in 2004 by co-owners Jackie Greenbaum and Patrick Higgins, Jackie’s was the first chef-driven “farm to table” restaurant to open in Silver Spring’s history. Coinciding with the incipient revitalization of Silver Spring, Jackie’s opened the same year as Discovery Communications’ headquarters and the American Film Institute—all signaling a new era for the region. Its arrival marked a turning point for Silver Spring as it garnered attention as a dining destination, in part due to its initial affiliation with James Beard award winning chef Ann Cashion.
“Jackie’s has been and always will be my proudest achievement,” said Jackie Greenbaum. “Not just for its brilliant food and atmosphere—which is pretty badass—but for the community it created in Silver Spring.” The bar and restaurant has become a home away from home for many Silver Spring and Takoma Park residents, and has hosted many memorable events. In 2005, it held the premiere reception for the academy award winning film “Crash,” with director and cast in attendance. In 2007, it was the home of the AFI’s SilverDocs hospitality center, ending with a blowout block party for Mayor Marion Barry’s documentary film, which included a performance by legendary DC go-go band Trouble Funk. “Dear PoPville,
I live in DC but I work in Silver Spring. One thing that always blows my mind is that food trucks don’t come to Silver Spring ever (notwithstanding the two permanent trucks in the gas station at Georgia and Colesville – both of which are very good!), although they go to other places in MoCo and way out in Virginia. I worked downtown for years, and I really miss having food trucks as a lunch option. Basically, they provide a great meeting place and offer a lot of creative, different, tasty, and local options that we don’t really have just over the line.
Any ideas as to why we don’t get food trucks? And, what can I/my fellow Silver Spring eaters do to woo the trucks in our direction? There are a lot of businesses and areas to park up there – it’d be worth it!”

“The rumors are true, we took over the old Piratz space as a temporary home. Join us tonight for friends and family (that’s you) at Quarry House Temporary. Opening doors around 6 ish. (Mostly) half priced burger night. Beer & whiskey list a work in progress. We can’t wait to see you. Come if you can and spread the word (Tonight is CASH only, no cc’s yet).”

Tough times continue for Silver Spring. From Piratz Tavern facebook:
Hear Ye, Hear Ye! Piratz Tavern will open it’s doors for the last time on Saturday April 4th. Unfortunately the negative publicity, constant prank calls, vandalism and bogus reviews generated by our unfortunate participation on Bar Rescue have taken their toll. To add insult to injury, late last year Taffer’s crew reached out to me again asking that we participate in a back to the bar episode. They promised that it would be followed by a re-rescue and that they would right all the wrong’s committed during the first episode. Obviously I don’t learn. I believed them. On December 1st we went to the effort to open on a Monday, the one day a week we have been closed for 8 years, with a skeleton staff of former employees who agreed to play the parts. It was basically coerced and staged to be an opening act for a re-rescue. I was told to bring in several changes of clothes to make it appear that filming covered several days. As usual they brought in a bunch of extras to fill the house and we were told what to say and with whom to speak. Throughout the entire shoot the director coached Juciano to curse and say negative things about John Taffer. He referred to me as the “hero”, my daughter as the “victim” and Juciano as the “villan”. Total bullshit frown emoticon Basically we have been fucked by reality TV again and with know one to blame but ourselves, we have decided not to renew our lease. Just can’t take anymore. Director James Agiesta sweet talked me into the deal and then left us behind like carnage, just like the first time. A HUGE thanks to all of you who worked and played so hard to make Piratz Tavern the awesome place it has been for the last 8 years.

“We are extremely sad about our temporary loss. Insurance will cover the rebuilding, but may not cover all of the Quarry House Family’s income.
The immortal J.P. McDermott happens to be in town, completely randomly, and has offered to play Saturday night at Jackie’s Restaurant.
The concert will start at 10pm and cost $10. All funds going to Quarry House staff. [Concert at Jackie’s 8081 Georgia Ave Silver Spring, Maryland]”

“We can’t tell you how touched we are by the outpouring of love and concern for the Quarry House and its staff. We know very little right now about the extent of the damage and when we will be able to reopen. For the time being, we are closed. We hope it’s just a short time, but we will keep you up to date as soon as we know anything more. Much love from the Quarry House family.”
“In answer to the many inquiries, no one was hurt, which is all that really matters. The place is still there, folks, and we will definitely reopen. More news as soon as we have some. Thank you again– we love you all.”

“I am writing to report our lost cat, Zella Mae. She has been missing since Sunday night from our home in Silver Spring at the corner of Bristol Avenue and Argyle Road (just east of the Sligo Creek Golf Course).
She is not micro-chipped, unfortunately.
She is a brown tabby with white on her breast and paws. About 13 lbs. Very friendly. Has white and orange patch on her snout.
She used to live in the Scooby Doo Mansion in Mt. Pleasant and therefore may have wandered in that direction from her new home.
She is very beloved! Any information on her whereabouts or other measures as to how to proceed would be much appreciated.
