“Target is announcing plans to open a new small-format store in Washington, D.C., located at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Eastern Avenue in the Shepherd Park neighborhood of Northwest D.C. This approximately 30,000-square-foot-store will be Target’s eighth open or planned small-format store in the D.C. metro area. It will join existing locations in College Park, Rosslyn, Bethesda and Falls Church Tinner Hill, as well as future stores in Cleveland Park (2019), Northeast D.C. on New York Ave (2020) and Ballston, Va. What a gorgeous time capsule house. It was on the market for over two weeks, which feels like an eternity in DC real estate market time. This solid Tudor sold for $20,000. below list in a NW DC neighborhood close to Rock Creek Park and at the Silver Spring edge of the city. It is also not far from major upcoming development at the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center site. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I keep seeing signs in Kalmia stating “keep kalmia safe” oppose Brandon todd’s bill DC22-57. Do you know what bill that is?”

Thanks to Liz for sending from Change.org:

“We write to you, our elected officials, as residents of Washington, DC who are deeply concerned about public health and safety risks due to increased traffic from Jemal’s Gateway DC near the intersection of Kalmia Road, Georgia Avenue, Alaska Avenue and Eastern Avenue, also known as the “Georgia Eastern” project, as currently proposed.

Bill B22-00057 seeks to close a public alley to help facilitate the Georgia Eastern project. If the project is built as currently proposed, we believe it will pose a public health and safety risk that is not acceptable to the neighborhood of Shepherd Park.

The developer estimates an increase of up to 351 cars/hour at peak hours on Kalmia Road NW. As residents of Kalmia Road and the surrounding streets, we know such an increase is just not physically feasible without a dangerously high safety risk imposed on residents. (more…)

There was a lot of speculation after Wegmans “looked doubtful” and when we last spoke about the massive Walter Reed development a few weeks ago. Well here we have it according to the new DC Neighborhood Profiles report from the Washington DC Economic Partnership (WDCEP):

Update: Thanks to all who sent this link from WBJ:

“The District-based Douglas has filed plans with the D.C. Zoning Commission to construct a mixed-use building on a 2-acre site bounded by Eastern Avenue, Georgia Avenue, Alaska Avenue and Kalmia Road NW in Shepherd Park. The project will include 199 multifamily units over 56,079 square feet of retail, anchored by a new Harris Teeter supermarket, and 271 underground parking spaces.”

Coming to McMillan too – but we knew that.

Also of note – DC’s daytime population is 1,145,482 – I’ve always wondered that!

Anyway, you can read the full report here.

boot party

A reader reports:

“Parking enforcement had a boot party on the 7900-8000 blocks of Eastern Ave today. They booted by my count 8-9 cars. Here are pics of some.”

I have to admit, I’m freaking loving this new feature, if you have a photo of a neat find from your house or place of work please send an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail.com thanks.

This might be my favorite one yet:

“Gunther’s beer Premium Dry Lager
Packed at the Brewery by Gunther Brewing Co. Inc., Baltimore MD
Tax paid at the rate prescribed by Internal Revenue

Flat top – requires churchkey to open

I believe this can was buried behind my bathroom walls in 1947 when the house was built (Shepherd Park). Which matches the date range for the tax label (required on cans filled before March 1950). The Gunther brewery building still exists in B’more – turned into apartments!”

Tiffani

Unbelievable

From the MPD-4D Listserv:

“Tiffani is a 5 year old, 7 pound toy Yorkie who was visiting DC from NJ for Thanksgiving when she was taken during a burglary [16th and Primrose NW]. Please be on the lookout. She has a rhinestone collar with ID tags. Contact dkingjohnson(at)msn.com for more information.”

Update: Returned!

“Dear PoPville,

The Car2Go that this note was on was parked at 14th and Roxanna St. NW, near Eastern Ave. and downtown Silver Spring, MD.”

Ed. Note: Another reader told me they heard the exact same debate in Brookland. Have other folks heard this debate?
