“Dear PoPville,

I live on Irving Street between Georgia Avenue and 14th Street, and it is constantly littered with trash. Two things exacerbate this: the south side of the street has street-side trash pickup that blows loose bits of trash everywhere, and my multiple attempts for public trash cans have been rejected by 311.

Today, I came home to find 3 lovely young women in Howard Bison jackets picking up every tiny bit of trash on the street, smiling and making their way down Irving. I jumped out of my car to thank them and they just waved off my thanks.

I’m not sure what prompted this, but thank you Howard University and thank you to students doing this on a blustery, gloomy day instead of Black Friday shopping.”

“Dear PoPville,

To all the readers, does anyone know what’s up with Maggie’s Hot Dogs on Euclid St. NW? I live right there and I swear they were open at the oddest times (not during breakfast times even though they sell coffee) and it now says it’s closed. I don’t think I have ever seen it open.”

From DC9:

“The Holidays are about giving and celebrating. They are about overindulgence and spending time with friends both new and old.

In that spirit DC9 is bringing back to life the much lauded Palena Burger!

It’s been five years since the acclaimed Palena closed its doors and the beloved burger graced the tables of DC dinners, and we miss it. Amber Bursik, chef at DC9, whom cooked at Palena for several years and cooked many of those Palena burgers herself thought this was the way she and DC9 could spread some holiday cheer to their guests. From Ivy & Coney:

“Ivy and Coney, DC’s premier baseball bar, is proud to announce the third annual Chai-vy and Cohen-y Hanukkah Bar: Bar Mitzvah1. Bar. Mitzvah (We invite you to let our amazing wordplay sink in for a moment). From December 2nd through New Years’ Eve of the year 5780, the Manischewitz shall flow, the dreidels shall spin and fun will be had by all. While some may prefer their holiday festivities as “Christmas-with-a-baseball-twist”, we’re pitching ours as “Baseball-with-a-Hanukkah-fastball.” Simply put, it’s gonna be meshuga2.

In honor of our holiday that involves actual fire (not just some wimpy string lights and pine trees), we’ve added delicious latkes, sufgani-shots (jelly donut in shot form), 8-night fiery cider (Hint: it starts with fire and ends in ball) and Manischewitz’s finest kosher wines to the menu. Latkes, arguably the most important culinary creation since unleavened bread, will feature prominently as a reminder of both that the oil used to light the menorah in the holy temple and that fried foods truly are the tastiest. Each night we will be lighting the Hanukiyah at approximately 7:30 PM (December 22nd through the 29th) and invite our guests to participate. (more…)

“I recently passed this hidden “wellness space” tucked away inside this row home. Looking at their website, I love their motto and definitely interested in trying it out. Haven’t seen a place like this yet in DC and been looking for one for a while. Curious if anyone has heard of this new local DC business and what they think?”

The Glow Club’s website says:

“We offer ambitious humans a place to strengthen their most valuable asset: their mind. At The Glow Club, you’ll meet other like-minded self-starters through guided meditation classes made to address the realities faced every day. You’ll also get access to wellness and business-related events, as well as first dibs on up-and-coming wellness brands, pop-ups and more. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

A friend of mine who is a musical conductor had his car broken into last night and lost a tan canvas-y backpack containing a bundle of musical scores for a concert he is leading this weekend. The break-in was around 9th and M Street, NW and I have to believe that whoever nabbed this pack was quickly disappointed with the merely musical offerings and disposed of the contents (perhaps with the pack, perhaps loose in order to keep the pack). It would be amazing if someone happened to find these manuscripts, some of which are precious and difficult to replace, and all of which have personal scribblings on them that make them far more useful to this conductor than any on-line replacement score could ever be.”

If someone happens to find them please email [email protected] and I’ll connect you with OP.
