7th and O St, NW

Looks like Shaw is about to get a new BBQ joint. A chef tells me that he has just signed a lease near the O Street Market (we should know the exact address soon) for a space that will become the Butcher Shoppe. This is the same chef who was deciding between a wine bar and Tavern that we spoke about last December. He has decided to change the concept to a casual BBQ joint with a beer garden that will feature home made sausages and smoked bbq serving ribs, briskets etc.

How does the menu sound?

A few folks inquired about what was happening at 7th and O St, NW last night. A reader sends the photo above and writes:

“Heard this from my apartment and came out to see a completely overturned van. The driver of a silver sedan (who caused the accident) was unharmed. He did not appear intoxicated but witnesses said he was driving very wrecklessly and hit the van head on causing it to flip. The woman driving the van was in very bad shape but she looked conscious.”

I told you I had a lot of scuttlebutt this week… Back in March 2010 a liquor license application was posted for a new spot called The Independent which was slated to be:

“Coffee House, bar lounge, 199 seats and total occupancy of 235 on first floor and storage on first and basement. Summer Garden with 75 seats and a total occupancy of 90.”

I now hear that Richard Sandoval is looking to take it over and make it a Peruvian restaurant. Sandoval is the Chef behind El Centro, Masa 14 and many others.

This would be huge news for this section of Florida Ave, NW. I think this would fit in nicely with the recent additions of Howard Theatre, Shaw’s Tavern and Bistro Bohem. Hard to imagine it would happen just a few years ago. Now it seems like a natural fit.

Of course, this is just scuttlebutt so I have no official confirmation at this point. I’d give this one a 78% accuracy rating.

Well, we’ve been admiring the renovated Howard Theatre from the outside – now have a look inside. It is equally as awesome, if not more so.

Last night I was lucky enough to attend a preview concert headlined by Trombone Shorty and George Clinton.

I went in with tremendous expectations. Unbelievably, they were exceeded. This place single-handedly kicks up the coolness of our city by a notch or three. Have a look:

725 Florida Ave NW

A couple of weeks ago we noted the new paint job at the former Tropicana Jamaican Eatery which closed in late Jan. 2012 at 725 Florida Ave, NW. I’ve been getting tons of inquiries from folks wondering who might be moving into the space. It’s been tough to find out anything. I once asked workers on the scene and they said it would be a restaurant. I asked if they knew what type of restaurant and they told me it would serve food. Ok. Not a lot to work on with that but earlier in the week I heard some promising scuttlebutt. I’m not sure of the accuracy but since so many folks have been curious – what the hell.

I hear that the folks behind the former Cafe Nema (remember how awesome that sign was?) will be taking over the space. Cafe Nema was located at 1334 U St. NW which is now home to the ****ing Codmother.

Stay tuned for more info on the former Tropicana as it becomes available.
