620 T St, NW

Community Day @ The Howard Theatre is this Monday, April 9th:

“On Monday, April 9th, come on down and breathe life into The Howard Theatre’s Rebirth. At 11:30am, we’ll kick things off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by live performances by Robert Thompson & The James Brown Experience Band, along with a host of other talents. Also, get a glimpse of The Howard Theatre’s magnificence, which will open its doors to the public for the first time in over 25 years.

For this special occasion, we’re closing down T Street to dedicate the recently installed sculpture of Duke Ellington and make way for fun and celebration. Hope to see you here at The Howard Theatre, on this Grand Reopening day!”

And last week a reader sent in some cell phone photos of the Duke Ellington sculpture going up in the plaza out front. I went back on Monday and my jaw promptly hit the ground. It looks amazing:

Remember when the building looked like this back in 2008:

Hard to believe this was a horse’s ass award nominee back in June 2009.

Back in Jan. 2012 we heard that a new pizza spot was coming to 467 Florida Ave, NW. After getting the heads up from a reader I stopped by yesterday and indeed Pizzarro is open for business. Currently they have pizza, calzones, paninis, pastas and salads. They also deliver within a 2 mile radius (unfortunately their Website is still a few weeks away.) Most prices on the menu range from between $7-$12. Though the gourmet pizzas are priced: $14.99 for a medium, $17.49 for a Large and $19.59 for an extra large.

In the future they’ll also offer crepes, coffee and free wifi.

Looks like pizza and coffee are trending on Florida Ave.

903 N St, NW

More good news for Shaw. Washingtonian reports:

“…the neighborhood spot will have a lineup of casual fare projected onto the wall so changes can be made if dishes run out or new ingredients arrive. The concept is hyper-seasonal: At dinner you could find a dish like frog’s legs with porcini gnocchi one day, and lamb loin the next, while lunch will focus on sandwiches and salads.”

Dear PoPville,

Any news on Shaw’s Tavern? They have an ABRA hearing poster that says their hearing was supposed to be on the 12th, but they sure aren’t serving alcohol still, and nothing on ABRA’s website that I could find. When I asked them, they said they are still “going back and forth.”

Hmm, last week they tweeted:

“Dear Friends, Please mind our new operation hours: Mon-Fri: 8am-4pm Sat & Sun: 9am-4pm”

Anyone else hear an update?

We recently judged their brunch here.

Shaw’s Tavern is located at 520 Florida Ave, NW.

1414 9th St, NW

It’s becoming fun to see what the space at 1414 9th St, NW will be called. In Feb. it was the Eagle Restaurant and Sports bar and today it is the Northern Restaurant. It’s actually quite comfortable inside and remains a Ethiopian and Eritrean restaurant with a bunch of tvs over the bar:

And a glance at the menu, with vestiges from their previous namesake, shows some reasonable priced items:

This rental is located at 1603 5th St, NW:

The listing says:

New wood floors, windows and baths. Secure one car parking. Owner will consider a pet. Washer/dryer on 1st level.”

This 2 bed/2.5 bath is going for $2,600/Mo.

1318 9th St, NW

Wow, awesome news from EastShawDC:

“Tom Power, owner of Corduroy restaurant at 1122 9th Street, NW, has entered into an agreement to purchase the building that houses Mood Lounge. The agreement is contingent on Power receiving financing, and the agreement may be terminated if the closing doesn’t occur before March 31, 2012.”

We judged Corduroy back in Jan. 2009. You can see their menu here. Great news for Shaw if this goes through.

Dear PoPville,

Have you heard anything about the tragedy that is 2100 Vermont Ave NW. The attached letter is on the front door as of yesterday so it seems like the blight is not going anywhere for at least 5 months. But what is weird is that they have started some external painting recently. What is the deal? Do you have any insight to this?

725 Florida Ave NW, March 2012

A reader sends word:

“On my way to work today I saw a number of people doing some work on the outside of the old Tropicana Jamaican Eatery. Any word on what they’re planning to put there?”

I stopped by for a photo yesterday and the folks on the scene said they were just painting and cleaning it up a bit. They didn’t know who was coming but I’ll def. follow up as soon as more info is available. The Tropicana Jamaican Eatery closed in late Jan. 2012 at 725 Florida Ave, NW just east of U Street.

Do you guys like the new colors?
