12th and S St, NW

In late October we finally learned who would be moving into the long vacant retail space at the corner of 12th and S St, NW. I stopped by yesterday and was told The Coffee Bar will be opening on Thursday or Friday (depending on some final paperwork.) Hours will be 7am-6pm. The space wasn’t completely photo ready but you can tell it’s gonna be pretty sweet. It is dominated by a huge bar and will have seating for around 35-40. There will be “no rules” wifi available. There will be pastries and Bethesda bagels among other eats. And of course we are talking some serious coffee here. The Cadillac of Coffee makers- La Marzocco:

1911 9th Street, NW

A few weeks ago we learned Simon Vintage would be taking over the former Toucan Boutique space at 1911 9th Street, NW just south of U Street. The owner writes:

We are now opened as of today, December 10th. We are selling vintage (and some newer) furnishings as well as many other vintage items.

There is a plan to get rid of the white wrought iron gate, but probably not until the summer.

We have a basic website up at simonvintage.com where you will see how Simon, miniature pinscher, ties into furniture…!

Pease stop in and say hello! Open 11 to 8 daily and noon to 8 weekends.

“Dear PoPville,

Happy Holidays! Just wanted to share some images from the 1600 block of 4th Street NW, where we got into the holiday spirit and decorated all of the trees on the block.”

1314 9th Street, NW

Back in July we learned the former Lamont Bishop gallery space would become A&D tavern next to Seasonal Pantry on 9th Street. I stopped in yesterday for a few photos while finishing touches were being completed. They’ll open today at 5pm and in the future they plan to open for weekend brunch as well. Currently the hours are Sun.-Thurs. 5pm-1am and Fri.-Sat. 5pm-2am. Kitchen will likely close around 11pm.

An awesome addition to this section of 9th Street. Have a look:

Potential future home of a Harris Teeter at southern end of Sherman Ave, NW

Dear PoP,

So, I’m confused.  A little while ago, you reported that Harris Teeter will be coming to the area just north of the 9:30 Club.  Now I hear that the DC government is considering a tax break so Howard Town Center (including a big grocery store) can be built just blocks away.  Are these both happening?  Can they co-exist?  I’m all for more retail and grocery store competition in the neighborhood, but this seems like overkill.  What exactly is going on here?

Anyone think a Harris Teeter and a large grocery store can coexist just a few blocks away from each other?
