Got a few emails like this one:

“Have you heard any information on Shaw’s Tavern from this past weekend? I understand there was a party on the second floor and ABRA investigators showed up revealing that the property had never been given a Certificate of Occupancy for the second floor. And that the bar built up there was illegally completed without any permits, a friend of mine said they were ordered to shut down the place?”

Ed. Note: Shaw’s Tavern originally had some troubles when they were first trying to open in 2011.

Back in September we noted there was again action at the former home to Vegetate, Cafe Eagle, Taqueria Mexicana, Eagle (again), Northern Restaurant and Secret Lounge and Sports Bar. At that time a commenter told us some scuttlebutt:

“the space has been leased by John Fielding, whose industry pedigree is pretty great (Broad Branch Market, Tabard Inn, etc.). He’s going to be opening a fast casual restaurant on the 1st floor with upstairs bar. Upscale Chinese cuisine is the rumored theme.”

Ed. Note: Props to the tipster for being 99% correct. Send more tips to [email protected] :) thanks.

A liquor license placard has now been posted for Chao Ku saying:

“A casual fast-food restaurant serving Chinese food. Seating for 56 and a total occupancy load of 56.”

Hours of operation are listed as Sunday through Saturday 10am – 2am.

Here’s lots more info from their Kickstarter page:

“Chao Ku, which means “super cool” in Mandarin slang, is a fast casual Chinese restaurant set to open in 2015 in the historic Shaw neighborhood of Washington, DC, serving fresh, traditional Chinese dishes and craft beer.

The Concept

This concept is the brainchild of John Fielding, founder of Broad Branch Market in Northwest DC and Paul Pelt, former head chef at the Tabard Inn, a longtime culinary landmark in the district.

John and Paul love to eat. So much so that they’ve made it a lifelong quest to find tasty, affordable food wherever they go. After years of restaurant-hopping around DC, they found themselves, more often than not, ending up in ethnic Chinese joints in the suburbs outside of the city. Through these expeditions, they noticed that DC was lacking in high-quality Chinese food within the city. Chao Ku is the realization of their ideal to introduce DC to this cuisine with fast, super-friendly service and authentic ingredients and techniques.

John and Paul believe that a great meal doesn’t have to be expensive and that good food is best when shared. Chao Ku will serve traditional Chinese food made from fresh ingredients, a far cry from your standard food court Chinese. Think savory Tofu Edamame, slow-cooked spare ribs, Singapore noodles, and ‘Chinese burgers’ served in pita buns. The food will be served in the classic Chinese “family style,” with vegetarian and vegan options, so everyone can try a bit of everything and it’s easy to order more. Best of all, the majority of the entrees will be less than $10 each.”

“Dear PoPville,

I’ve stopped by Mr. P’s (a ribs place noted by the presence of a big bus) the past two Sundays. Last Sunday, there were chairs and a few signs up listing hours. Today, there were no chairs and no indications of hours. I’d tried their phone number a few times, but got indications that the line was disconnected or voice mail?

Is it closed? Has it moved?”

still from next screening – Kolja

From an email:

Every third Tuesday in the month, we screen Czech movies that became famous and popular for various reason. Every year, we feature world famous Czech director and this year we are introducing Zdenek Sverak retrospective. Most importantly, they are very good movies, mostly indie films, screened right here at the Bistro Bohem. [600 Florida Ave, NW]

The event is co-sponsored by the Embassy of the Czech Republic which provides the movie screening rights and discussion about the movie and Bistro Bohem, which hosts the festival and provides first beer free to all guests.

We have just finished our 2015 movie outline and I wanted to share it with you and your readers. The screenings are free but making reservations is recommended as the festival has been very popular and we want to ensure that everyone can get in.”

Thanks to a reader for sending:

“Looks like the expansion has begun. I noticed over the weekend that they had taken down part of the outside bar and then last night saw the paper up at the (now former) China Express next door.”

Back in August we learned:

“The planned building will feature three bars, a grand beer hall, state of the art bathrooms and private lockers for regulars to keep their steins on premises. Dacha’s beer menu will expand; however, Weihenstephaner Brewery products will continue to be the core of the draft lineup. The third floor bar will feature rare, hard to find beers, meads and ciders. A full kitchen will allow Dacha to expand its food offerings.

If all goes as planned, the new addition will open in the summer of 2015. The garden, however, will open in its current format in early spring of 2015 and will operate while the China Express building is being renovated.”
