Oof. I’m gonna go ahead and call this an uptick. Thanks to Kristen for sending from 10th and Spring St, NW:

“1) how long do you think it takes to strip a car of all four wheels, both front headlights, and all Cadillac insignia?
2) where the hell are the police during something obviously took longer than just a minute or two?!?”

Ed. Note: It had been 1 day since our last stolen wheels.

4203 9th Street, NW when Lighthouse first opened at this location in 2014

Thanks to David for passing on:

“It’s with great sadness that I must let you know that Lighthouse Yoga Center will be closing our doors at our 9th Street location on September 22. We were notified by our landlord that the building is being sold, and the new owner wants us out immediately. Unfortunately, according to the terms of our commercial lease, we have no recourse but to leave. (more…)

“Hey DC DPR, the Upshur dog park is still closed for maintenance, but according to the sign that should have been over 12 days ago. What’s the status? Lola was very disappointed she couldn’t run around with her dog friends this morning.”

DPR responds:

“Sorry for any confusion. The project was delayed due to rain several times. A new sign will be posted. We will reopen this week!”

14th and Spring Road, NW

“Dear PoPville,

Curious to know if anyone in the PoPville community knows any updates on Carolina Restaurant at 14th and Spring Road NW. It’s been vacant for quite some time, but there seems to be construction activity (see photos attached). As an upper 14th Street resident, we’d love to hear some more good news about businesses coming into this area!”

Demo first began back in 2015! Anyone know what’s coming?

The Office of Attorney General (OAG) reached court-ordered settlements that require owners of two apartment buildings and two businesses in Deanwood to put in place strong new building security measures. “Dear PoPville,

Last week, my family endured a terrifying incident in Petworth that I wanted to share. Early Wednesday, August 8, there were gun shots in the immediate vicinity of our house, which while less common than it used to be, is sadly not that unusual. Moments later, a man ran into our backyard from the alley and promptly kicked down our back lower basement door. I was able to get in between him and our main stairs on our ground floor and tackled him to prevent him from getting upstairs where my children and wife were hiding. The man was shot twice in the abdomen (I think) and stopped trying to get upstairs. The police were there within minutes and took the man away on a stretcher.

I can’t prove it, but I am nearly certain that this man, who I don’t know and had never seen before, is associated with a house a block away that has long been connected with the drug trade. (more…)

The following was written by PoPville contributor David McAuley, founder of Short Articles about Long Meetings.

3905 14th Street, NW at Randolph St. back in 2016

Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 4C/Petworth has voted unanimously to oppose an application by Golden Paradise Restaurant (3903-3905 14th Street NW) to operate a 26-seat sidewalk café with alcohol service. The vote took place at the ANC’s regularly-scheduled meeting on August 8.

“I did not get a single email in support. Everybody wants us to oppose this license,” one ANC Commissioner said.

The ANC’s draft letter to DC’s liquor licensing authorities notes that, in the last two years, there were 27 police reports in connection with the establishment. Over the same period, there were five additional police incidents that did not result in reports, as well as 16 occasions when the establishment was the subject of action by liquor licensing authorities, including three separate incidents which resulted in fines. Golden Paradise Restaurant also had its license suspended for four days in October 2016 as a result of a stabbing that occurred in May of that year.

“This is a tenfold increase on any other bar,” said Commissioner Jonah Goodman (district 10).

“Yes, they have a track record of incidents,” said Ana De Leon, who represented the owners at the meeting. “If you look at this, they feel they are being targeted.”

De Leon apologized for not reaching out to the ANC sooner, and promised to investigate every incident on the ANC’s list. (more…)
