Dear PoPville,
I wanted to let you know that at 1 pm yesterday afternoon my husband was assaulted and mugged outside our house on Shepherd St. 1300 block. 3 teenagers surrounded him and puched him several times and shoved himto the ground, he got up and ran but they chased, ripping off his backpack. He then turned and chased them while calling the police. Bag was found by a worker in the alley but laptop was gone. I am so shocked and saddened by this violent act in broad daylight on a busy residential street in a neighborhood that i love so much. Residents should keep awareness up at all times i guess.

On Sunday, September 30, 2012, at approximately 4:15 am, patrol officers from the Fourth District came upon the scene of a crash involving two vehicles in the 4700 block of Georgia Avenue, NW. The officers observed that the occupants – two adult males in one of the vehicles, were trapped inside and unable to free themselves due to the crash. The officers also observed that the vehicle was on fire and the flames were overtaking the passenger compartment of the vehicle. Both officers immediately responded over to the burning vehicle and were able to remove both the driver and passenger.
As a result, the occupants sustained third-degree burns over a large portion of their bodies and the officers, as a result of their life saving efforts, also received minor burns to their hands and arms.The occupants of the burning vehicle were transported to a local hospital where they were admitted for their injuries and are listed in critical condition at this time. The officers involved were treated on the scene by members of DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services.
The striking vehicle was operated by 38-year-old male who had one adult male passenger in the front seat. Both occupants of the striking vehicle sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash and were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Unit responded to the scene and the area hospitals, where they determined that the operator of the striking vehicle was under the influence of alcohol at the crash and placed him under arrest for Driving Under the Influence. Further charges are pending.
This case is currently under investigation by the Major Crash Unit. Identities are withheld until next of kin notifications are made.
I’m digging the brick crosswalks on Georgia Ave. These are from outside the Petworth Library but I also saw some a bit south by Sweet Mango and the CVS.

Dear PoPville,
I have to say my husband & I are pleasantly surprised with the latest addition to Petworth. Epiphany. He went a week ago for lunch while working on the house and he is from NC and spent a fair amount of time in Texas. In his opinion, the brisket was solid. Now, I can tell you he has extremely high standards. Tonight, we stopped in for dinner. Cece was at the register and was sweet as can be. The Chef, Christian was very proud to chat with us after eating. My husband repeated with the brisket and I got the pulled pork. Two happy diners :) The collards were sweet (not tangy or spicey) but good and the cole slaw was really good. We will return and love this new affordable neighborhood place.

A few weeks ago I noticed that the former Safari DC space had been leased at 4306 Georgia Ave, NW in Petworth. I spoke with the owner who said there will be an extensive renovation, though the name will stay the same, and they hope to reopen in November. More info as construction progresses.

I noticed some work going on at the commercial property located at 5505 5th St, near the corner of 5th and Kennedy. The old sign indicates it was the home of the National Association of Former Foster Care Children of America. Know what’s up?
