Great job by the 4D Detectives in obtaining an arrest warrant for the perpetrator and great job by the 4D patrol officers, searching high and low for him to get a violent offender off the streets.”

On Monday I mentioned how strange it was to see The Passenger closed. What’s even stranger is seeing the Ruppert Real Estate – Real Restaurant Sign removed (recently home to Hogo though others will recall the old warehouse.) Ruppert of course is Paul Ruppert (among many other legendary Rupperts) of Room 11, Petworth Citizen, Upshur Books, Crane & Turtle fame. The latter establishments are of course all located on Upshur Street in Petworth. So it is no surprise that come springtime that’s where you’ll find the legendary Ruppert Sign reinstalled. A serious sign of the times!

From an email:

EatsPlace, the food incubator and pop-uppery, announces its next chef in resident. Baba’s Dumplings, helmed by Katy Chang, will make hand-kneaded dumplings and soup noodles. Katy is one of the founders of EatsPlace, and EatsPlace will also be featuring her Baba’s Cooking School line of award-winning hot sauce and a new line of bitters.

“One of the reasons I founded EatsPlace was to allow chefs to share their food with the community. I’m happy to have the opportunity to present my own food, which was inspired by my Baba (dad), who was a chef,” says Katy.

“I also am excited to be able to feature a line of Baba’s Cooking School Bitters as all natural aromatic flavor enhancers. In Chinese culinary tradition, bitter foods are keyed to the heart. So it is with all of my heart that I make and present these bitters.”

The pop-up will soft open starting this Saturday (1/10) with limited hours 6-9 and then regular hours starting on Sunday (1/11).

New station by Union Market installed in November

“Dear PoPville,

Do you know why capital bikeshare hasn’t put any stations in the northeast Petworth area? Sherman circle would be a great location. I’ve tried tweeting cap bikeshare and submitting on their website, but no response.”

Ed. Note: Back in Sept. we learned about 12 potential future stations. Anyone know the best way to request others?

Update: Sold out in 2 1/2 hours but they’ll be adding names to our wait list between 12:00 and 1:00pm at (202) 670-4409.

From an email:

“On Saturday, January 10 and Sunday, January 11 from 5:30-9:30pm, Bad Saint will host a dinner pop-up at Crane & Turtle in Petworth. Bad Saint, a Filipino American neighborhood eatery opening in Columbia Heights, will offer a 5-course menu of food from throughout the Philippine archipelago.

The menu will take diners beyond lumpia, pancit, and other gateway dishes, delving deeper into the Malay, Chinese, and Spanish roots of the cuisine. If our November pop-up was an introductory primer on Filipino food, these two nights will comprise an intermediate level workshop, highlighting lesser-known ingredients and regional preparations.

The dinner will be $60 per person, including tax and gratuity. Guests can choose one of two options: an omnivore’s menu or a vegetarian menu.

A limited number of seats are available. Tickets must be reserved and paid for in advance.

Ticket reservations will be taken at (202) 670-4409 on the days and times listed below until tickets are sold out:

Monday, January 5 – Wednesday, January 7
Daily – 12:00-3:00pm

Crane & Turtle is located at 828 Upshur Street, NW.

Bad Saint will be opening on 11th Street, NW in Columbia Heights this winter.”

Your prayers have been answered. Well some of your prayers have been answered. Let me rephrase, my prayers have been answered. We first heard about The Pitch back in May but the liquor license placard language was way off (not to be a Jazz Lounge) this is going to be a real deal sports bar. And for my fellow soccer fans, there is a huge international component. Hours will be Sun.-Thurs. 4pm-12am and Fri.-Sat. 4pm – 2am with happy hour 4-7pm Mon.-Fri.

I stopped in for a chat with the owner and general manager. You’ll just have to trust me on this until you get to check it out for yourself – this place is the real deal. There are two levels with flat screen tvs and a projector for big games/matches. In addition to all DC sports teams they’ll be a huge “destination for international sports” including Premier League and La Liga soccer matches as well as cricket and rugby.

Co-owner Jay Narain says:

We have created a venue that appeals to a diverse crowd, including families, sports fans and most importantly the resident of the Petworth community, both old and new. Like our neighborhood, our menu is a little Caribbean meets Southern comfort, meets Americana; together that creates some damn good food. Who doesn’t want that?

Hell freaking yes!!! And for real the guy is a down to earth honest to goodness good guy.

Oh yeah they have a sweet roof deck (and in the spring will have a nice back patio too):

Whoa, thanks to Amanda for capturing (and sending us) this awesome encounter:

“Driving down New Hampshire in petworth and this beautiful eagle dive bombed into my car trying to collect an injured (dead?) squirrel from the road. It was quite a surprise to realize the giant bird that nearly hit my windshield was an eagle, who then perched on a rooftop for a few minutes looking all majestic before swooping down to collect his supper and flying away. It was quite the show!”

From Mayor-elect Bowser around 12:30am:

“Thank you to those who joined me this evening in your neighborhood for a walk-thru.

Unfortunately, MPD is currently responding to multiple shots fired at a home in the 700 block of Varnum Street, NW. At this time, there are no injuries to report. MPD responded within minutes and is searching for a burgundy Ford Explorer.

During our walk-thru, I spoke with residents and Commander Manlapaz about additional resources. MPD is all over Ward 4.

Of course, I am continuing to monitor the situation and remain in contact with MPD.

If you were in the vicinity and saw anything, please contact MPD immediately.”

From the Forum:

“Dear Petworth,

The violence of the last few days is unacceptable – no resident should expect to live in fear in Washington, DC.

I am monitoring the situation closely and am in constant contact with Chief Lanier and Commander Manlapaz, who oversee the 4th District.

This evening, the Chief concluded the evening and committed to roll call in Ward 4, and additional foot patrols in the Ward– with a focus on well-known hot spots. Additional resources have been deployed since Christmas Eve and there are more to come.

Tonight, I will tour the Ward with the Commander to ensure deployment of resources.
On Monday, the Chief and her team will provide a full briefing to me from the MPD headquarters, where I will review their immediate action plan to stop violence before it starts.

As always, please be mindful of your surroundings and if you see something, say something.

Sincerely,

Mayor-elect Muriel Bowser
(202) 491-4842”
