“Dear PoPville,
The city has drained fountains to prepare for the cold but it seems that someone forget about our pool. I would hate for a freeze to damage the neighborhood swimming pool.”

I’ve been included on a series of emails about a home in the 300 block of Gallatin Street, NW. It is painful but eye opening to read – all involved genuinely seem to want to help – but can’t. Following is just a sampling from this morning:
From a resident:
“Morning Everyone,
Just doing my monthly check to see if we are anywhere on 3xx [Gallatin St, NW]? there are still a dozen or so people in the home, it is still falling apart. there are still people living in the garage and urinating and defecating in the alley and backyards.”

“10th & Quincy NW.
I looked up the permit application and found the following comments. #4 is particularly surprising and disappointing–the way I read it, the city is requiring them to shrink the porch and further screw up the continuity on this block simply to satisfy the lot occupancy maximums.
(r-4 zoning district) — zoning approval for conversion of an existing single family row dwelling into a two-family flat with two (2) parking spaces. includes a rear/third floor addition, with rooftop deck and penthouse (stairway). prior to issuance of a certificate of occupancy for a flat, a zoning inspection will be required for the following: 1. verify use as a flat; 2. verify installation of two (2) parking spaces; 3. verification that permeable pavers have been installed for the parking pad (to satisfy the requirements of section 412 of dcmr title 11); and 4. verify that the covered section of the front porch has been reduced to nine (9) feet wide to satisfy the maximum lot occupancy requirements for flats in the r-4 zoning district.
(I also learned today that the Shift keys on DCRA’s keyboards are all broken.)”

From MPD:
“8:30 pm: 4900 B/O 7th Street, NW – MPD received multiple calls for sounds of gunshots from 7th & Emerson to 7th & Jefferson Streets, NW.
Officers canvassed the area and located multiple cartridge casings (9mm and .40cal) as well as a stop sign that had been shot.
No victims, witnesses, or other damaged property was located.
MPD took a report for Destruction of DC Govt Property.”
and
“On today’s date [Sunday] at approximately 5:45 pm, First District officers assigned to High Visibility Patrol duties observed suspicious activities and subsequently conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle at 9th and Maryland Avenue NE. At that time, they conducted an on-scene investigation and recovered a .45 caliber handgun. Officers arrested Mr. Dell Adams (57) of Southeast, Washington, D.C. charging him with felony weapon violations. As our work continues, it is disturbing, but yet pleasing to remove another illegal firearm from our city and our communities.
As the MPD remains committed to combat these street crimes, it is incumbent upon us all to remain vigilant of our surroundings and take precautions to protect our persons and secure our valuables from persons seeking to capitalize on our vulnerabilities. Please stay safe and be smart!”

Rock Creek Church Rd, New Hampshire and Georgia Ave, NW
“Dear PoPville,
I was narrowly grazed by a car around 10pm tonight [Thursday] at the intersection of Georgia Ave + Rock Creek Church Rd NW. This is par for the course around Petworth Metro, as New Hampshire adds turns lanes that no one seems to expect pedestrians to be in – although the right of way is theirs. While walking south on GA with the right of way, I was narrowly grazed by a black Honda Civic who chose hot to yield although Rock Creek at this junction amounts to a service road and I had a walk sign & undeniably, the right of way. This is par for the course on GA Ave – If you need to speed down Rock Creek Church – either stop acting like an a**hole or go back to burbs. I EXPECT this while crossing Georgia Ave. Otherwise, follow basic road rules!”

A reader reports:
“A young man in his 20’s was assaulted at 8pm last night [Monday] at Kansas Ave & Quincy St. After stealing all his personal belongings, they ran up the 3800 block of Kansas Ave and west on Randolph St towards 14th St.
Not only is this disturbing because it happened so early in the evening when many of our families are still out and about, but it further illustrates the spike in crime in DC — especially near the Petworth metro and upper 14th St.
The young man was ok from what I understand, but was still at the hospital at the time of this email.
Update
He is doing well as I understand it. Very well liked in the neighborhood. Not seriously injured although he did sustain injuries. There is (another) community crime meeting to discuss this with MPD. Kid was 20 years old walking home from the Coupe at 8pm.

Received a large number of tweets last night about hearing 7-8 shots fired in Petworth.
Details from MPD:
“At approximately 1130 pm officers received a call for Sounds of Gunshots in the 400 block of Delafield Place, NW.
Officers quickly responded and observed a dark colored SUV making a U turn in the block.
An attempt was made to stop the vehicle and the vehicle fled through the rear alley of the 800 block of Crittenden St., NW.
Officers then observed the vehicle being parked in the 800 block of Decatur St, NW. Suspects exited the vehicle and ran through the alley.
A perimeter was established and K9 was called. A concerned resident was able to assist officers with narrowing their search to a smaller area.
Officers located both suspect hidding in a yard while police K9 dogs were able to locate a semi automatic hand gun believed to have been used by the suspects.
An examination of the vehicle the suspects were driving revealed a large quantity of Crack.
Great work as a result of the police and community partnership established in PSA 407!”
