“Dear PoPville,

Around 9am this morning someone smashed my front passenger window on 7th St NW between Randolph and New Hampshire and grabbed a backpack off the front seat. I was only away from the car for about 1 minute so I think the person was on a skateboard or maybe a bicycle? Or a fast runner Bc I saw no one when I came back out.

Several key items were in the bag that I desperately need to have found:
MacBook Pro 13″ retina laptop, Serial number: C02NG69WG3QJ
2 external hard drives (desperate to find these drives)
2 mifi units
Passport
Insurance card

The backpack looks like the attached photo, with a White House patch on it, and one of the drives is labeled like the second photo only it says “2016” instead of 2015. Third photo is similar to the second drive that was in the bag only that one is labeled as “Ghana 2015 A” I believe. It’s a 1 terabyte seagate.

Fourth photo has a strip identifying the drives with my email and phone number. I’m not sure if the two drives that were stolen had that on it or not.

I sorely need the drives back, they are my backups which I normally store inside safely. They have files of photographs that don’t exist anywhere else from my job as a photojournalist for the Associated Press and personal photo files as well. If anyone finds them, in whatever condition, please contact me. No questions asked.

Inside is also a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014) with a purple cover. There is a round sticker that says “AP” on the front along with Velcro strips.

There are Bernie Sanders and Ted Cruz stickers from when I covered their campaigns on the back.

I also had two mifi units to connect to the Internet in the bag, and a passport of me valid for four years, along with some cash and a discover card (which I’ve canceled)

It was only in the car for less than a minute in broad daylight. I’ve done a police report but need your help to get back my files, please help!

thoughts

“Dear PoPville,

My husband and I are wondering if we are the only ones that find this odd. Our neighbors are having a BBQ/party and the cops showed up [over the weekend]. At first we thought maybe there was a noise complaint, but they started eating the food off the grill and have now been there for over an hour. It started with one MPD vehicle and now there are two. They are in their uniforms and in marked cars. Are they on the clock? Is this appropriate? Wondering your thoughts. This is in Petworth on Georgia Ave (4D).”

shots fired

DVD reports:

“responding to incident in alley between Shepard and Randolph NW. Detectives on the scene.”

Another reader reports:

“I heard approximately 5 loud, single gunshots near 13th and Randolph St NW at 4:30am this morning. Immediately following the incident, there was audible talking in the alley between the 1300 block of Sheperd St and Randolph St NW. I called the police within a minute of the incident to report what I had heard. A 911 operator picked up right away and, in the time that it took me to explain what had I had heard, a police vehicle had already pulled into the alley. The police vehicle stopped halfway down the alley and an officer rushed out of his vehicle with gun drawn shouting in the direction of the audible talking in the alley following the gun shots. Within a minute, two other officers were running towards the commotion. Additional police vehicles came and left the scene during the course of this past halfhour.

There was another single loud bang sound at 5:06am. It was unclear whether or not that was a gunshot and/or related to the initial incident.”

tree

Thanks to a reader for sending:

“Remember this tree near the Petworth playground on 8th? It was chopped down and left for dead… but not this tree. Growing strong… and this picture is from a while ago. Everytime I see it, it reminds me what resilience is all about….”

Ed. Note: I don’t literally think these folks are heroes along the lines of firefighters and emergency responders, apologies if that was not clear. You can see previous nominees here. From MPD:

“Pursuant to an investigation into the gunshots that were fired in the 700 block of Gallatin Street, NW, on June 5, 2016, this evening members of the Fourth District Crime Suppression Team executed a search warrant on a house located in the 700 block of Gallatin Street, NW. The members recovered suspected drugs, a firearm and ammunition, and made two arrests in connection with this seizure.

This is just one example of how the Fourth District has been working tirelessly to combat the violent crime in this area. This year alone, Fourth DIstrict members have recovered multiple guns in this area and have made over a dozen arrests for robbery as well as firearm and drug-related offenses, and we will continue to work diligently to eliminate the violent crime pervading this area.”
