Thanks to a reader for passing on the gofundme request:

“Monday December 5, 2016 at 4am my family went through the worst and scariest thing I could ever imaged. Our house caught on fire cause of some one else careless mistake we had to suffer. I have never been the person to ask for help when I need it i would always find a way to deal with my own problems. But this problem is way to big for me to handled on my own or even my family to help. I’m not asking for much but if you can help please help so I can help my family and daughters have some where to stay and get things we need to start over. This has been very hard on us.. seeing my family hurting really hurts me especially when I can’t do anything. But I am thankful we get see another day and that we made it safe..”

From MPD at 11:13am:

“Approximately 30 minutes ago C-1 exited the Petworth Metro Station and started walking eastbound on Randolph Street when C-1 noticed four suspects following. C-1 began to run. The suspects caught up to C-1 in front of 502 Randolph and struck C-1 multiple times knocking him to the ground. All four suspects continued to strike him as one suspect removed property from his pocket. S-1 through S-4 fled westbound and ran up 7th street.

All four suspects were described as being approximately 18 years of age. (more…)

Back in August many of us were saddened to learn that the OG Chez Billy in Petworth had closed and would be reopening with a new concept. Having seen the new space and tasted the new concept, while I always will be a bit nostalgic for the old days, I’m super excited because Chef Tim Ma is the man and I freaking love pot stickers!!

Those who still lament the loss of Chez Billy may remain saddened by some of the interior changes (however: an even better renovated back patio will be coming this spring.) But those who love good food for a good price in a cool space will be very very happy.

For those not familiar with the background of Ten Tigers:

“Ian and Eric Hilton, together with partners Scott Herman and Chef Tim Ma are set to open Ten Tigers Parlour, a neighborhood tea house and bar on December 10 in Petworth. Located in the former Chez Billy space at 3813 Georgia Avenue, NW, the Ten Tigers Parlour will feature an eclectic menu of cocktails, teas, Asian-style street food and pastries throughout the day and evening.

The concept of Ten Tigers Parlour is inspired by the Chinese cultural influences, where tea houses traditionally serve as the community gathering place not only to eat, but to connect. “It has always been our goal to create a great neighborhood spot for people; an extension of their living rooms,” says partner Ian Hilton.

Chef Tim Ma, of Kyirisan, Water & Wall and Chase the Submarine has developed a menu of casual favorites, inspired by dishes he enjoyed as a young child. “I want to present food that is close to my heart, said Chef Tim Ma. It’s great to be able to offer simple dishes that require technique, but are unpretentious and just tasty.” The menu is crafted around a selection of handmade Soup Dumplings ($12), a popular dish not easily found in town. There will be handmade Bao Buns ($9), Pan-Fried Dumplings ($7), a selection of noodles ($11 each), Rice Donburi ($10) and more of Chef Ma’s childhood favorites. Pastry Chef Mollie Bird has designed a offering of Chinese pastries for Ten Tigers that includes egg tarts, sesame balls, almond breads and other specialties. (more…)

Ed. Note: Domku closed after a decade back in June.

From a press release:

“Anna Bran Leis and Shawn Leis who own DC Empanadas, announce the opening of their new concept, Taqueria del Barrio, in the Petworth neighborhood early 2017.

The modern taqueria will serve lunch and dinner with a solid bar program and then start brunch a little bit down the road. Anna has tapped cocktail expert Chris Martino to run the bar program and will have Mikey Torres in the front-of-the-house as General Manager. In the kitchen, Anna will be the Chef, as well. The menus will be comprised of tacos, tortas, a bar menu with appetizers, and traditional Mexican entrees as well as traditional desserts with a twist. Everything is going to be very authentic and scratch made, down to the tortillas. (more…)

So they underestimated the reopening date. It will be worth the wait for the El Sol reincarnation! Stay tuned for an exact opening date, (I’ve sent an email for confirmation) possibly Dec. 1st according to their website:

A reader reports at 8am:

“Not much to go off, but it would appear Twisted Horn is changing names. Does DC need another Hank’s concept though??”

Hank’s Cocktail Bar’s facebook page says:

“Allow us to reintroduce ourselves… as Hank’s Cocktail Bar.

We will continue to offer the same seasonally focused, high-quality food and drink menu, the same affordable prices, and the same great neighborhood vibe that guests have come to know and love at The Twisted Horn as well as JL Restaurant Group’s sister venues, Hank’s Oyster Bar & Hank’s Pasta Bar.

“We’re excited to share this name change with you all,” Owner, Chef & Restaurateur Jamie Leeds says. “We would always refer to The Twisted Horn as our cocktail bar, so why not call it that. As JL Restaurant Group expands and as we celebrate the one-year anniversary of The Twisted Horn in January 2017, we wanted to bring the cocktail bar under the Hank’s brand.”

walters

From Walters Sports Bar [3632 Georgia Ave NW]:

“At 8:30 this morning Walters was broken into through our back door. Looks like 2 males jumped our back fence, broke our back window out and gained entrance. 2 hooded males with sparkly shoes stole our cash register and a case of Powers. While we appreciate their taste in whiskey if anyone saw something please let us or Investigator Kevin Decker 202.715.7506”
