Sherman Circle NW, Today at 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to let you know and invite you to a community iftar event my friend and I are throwing tonight in Sherman Circle. It is the last few days of Ramadan and we are hosting an iftar (breaking fast meal) with nibbles and a chance for the neighborhood to get together and understand muslim culture and tradition.

Congrats to Homestead!! My kinda party (3911 Georgia Ave, NW):

“We are roasting a pig and smoking some brisket, lots of booze and a DJ at 9pm.”

Buy your tickets here.

And in other pig roasting in Petworth news, if you didn’t get your fill Friday, Ruta del Vino (800 Upshur St, NW) has you covered Saturday:

“Join us for some pig picking…and Pinot picking! Help us break in our new Caja China, a traditional Cuban-style pig roasting box, and enjoy mojo-rubbed heirloom pork, sides, and several different Pinot Noirs. With your input, we’ll be selecting a new Pinot to add to our list!

We’ll start at 6:00 and eat and drink until it’s gone on our outdoor patio.

$49 for unlimited pig, Pinot, and sides.
$16 per plate and $10 per glass a la carte.”

Thanks to Mark for sending:

“I asked inside if the lease had increased beyond what they could afford and the woman behind the counter said, “no, they’re going to build condos”. So I’m guessing a couple of things: owner of the building sold and the ubiquitous four up and several back glassed front rectangle will be built in the nicely developing business strip on Upshur. Shame as there doesn’t appear to be another decent dry cleaner in Petworth, the one on Georgia near Safeway getting 1.5 stars and bad bad reviews. And Upshur has been developing a very nice strip of small local shops and good restaurants.”

Anyone else hear development plans?

When I lived in Petworth I had a love/hate relationship with Kilroy’s but in the end they won me over. They will be missed. Now the day Philip’s Shoe Repair closes is the day I and many others will truly weep. May it be many moons from today. Baruch Ha’shem.

Around 10:30pm Thursday night Michael tweeted us:

“Just heard a number of pops go off around Grant Circle. Maybe 5-6, very rapid. Anyone else hear this?”

From MPD:

“We responded to the sounds of gun shots in the 4700 block of 5th Street, NW. During the canvass, officers recovered several spent shell casings, thankfully no one was injured.”

3702 14th Street, NW

Ed. Note: This strip of 14th is also home to Red Derby, Lyman’s, Mezcalero, Taqueria Habanero as well as Quincy Liquor hoping to add a coffee option, not to mention French’s Cleaners and the bodega.

A reader reports:

“Delicia’s Market on 14th Street recently gutted half of the grocery store. I asked the cashier if they sold the space and what might be going in. She told me the rent was too high and that she needed to downsize. She also mentioned a Cuban restaurant was going in the empty space.

Update:

I spoke to the owner of the new Cuban restaurant coming in next to Delicia’s market. They’re aiming for a September 2017 opening! They are currently building out the roofdeck too!”

STAY TUNED.

From the files of people can be awful vol. 77 – porch thieves. I wish there were a way to track down this plant but that does not seem likely. Saw this sad report on the Petworth listserv yesterday:

“I had a planter stolen off my front porch Sunday morning at 4:11am @ 5th & Randolph. It was a plant that had been in the family for generations that traveled from Mississippi to Texas to Ohio and finally to DC.

I wanted to share the video in case anyone sees the person and warn everyone to safeguard items on the porch.”
