I’ve been dying to see how this new building turned out. From their website:

“KENYON STREET FLATS

BRAND NEW – six unit apartment building in Columbia Heights
4 Two-bedroom/two-bath and
2 Three-bedroom/two-bath residences”

You can see what the units look like inside here.

I was able to get a couple of prices:

UNIT #3 2BR/2BA $2,550/mo
UNIT #4 3BR/2BA $3,550/mo
Parking $85/month

There is an open house Thursday 6-8pm.

From a press release:

“A report of “deplorable housing conditions” at Park Morton on a local blog has been determined to be fictitious.

The District of Columbia Housing Authority takes complaints seriously. DCHA immediately investigated a Prince of Petworth post that featured several housing violations. The claims made in the post were found to be fabricated. The blog post has since been removed from the site. Ed. Note earlier this week the post was removed at the request of the OP who at the time said he felt threatened. Nevertheless, my sincere apologies to the DC Housing Authority if the photos were indeed fabricated by the OP.

During the inspection, it was determined that the online post was submitted by an adult dependent of a Park Morton resident. That dependent admitted to causing the destruction of property and making a false report to a neighborhood website. DCHA repaired the issues.

It is DCHA’s mission is to provide quality affordable housing to extremely low- through moderate-income households while fostering communities and cultivating opportunities for residents to improve their lives.”

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to invite you to an awesomely unique new happening on Georgia Avenue. Kokeb restaurant is opening an Ethiopian Brunch starting this Sunday, June 29th from 11am – 1pm.

The grand Opening will feature a buffet of amazing dishes, a traditional coffee ceremony, spiced bloody mary’s, honey wine, and music. We will also be selling goods handmade by Ethiopian in a partnership with myfight, a group that is fighting poverty by creating international marketplaces for skilled women.

Going forward, the restaurant will open at 10 am Saturdays and Sundays.

I lived in Ethiopia for two years as a Peace Corps volunteer. Kokeb to me represents what Ethiopia feels and tastes like and this is extends to the genuine hospitality of the owner.”

An interesting piece of scuttlebutt passed on from a reader:

“I was in the L&N Thrift Store on Georgia Avenue and the lady in there told me that they were selling the building to a developer who was going to put that building together with the one next door to assemble a lot to build condos on.”

Ed. Note: Before moving to Georgia Ave, L and N Thrift was located at 1830 14th St, NW now home to the Amsterdam Falafel in Logan.

With word that Mike’s Thrift store will also likely be closing on H Street – are there any good thrift stores left in the District?

Here’s the article mentioned in this morning’s rant/revel – D.C.’s last serial killer: The Princeton Place murders, 20 years later:

“D.C. was a different place then, particularly on the rougher edges of town, and the brutality of the Princeton Place murders seemed to catch the zeitgeist. D.C. was Murder Capital, U.S.A. Gentrification was a rumor. Drug markets were open-air and in your face. Police were overwhelmed. The coroner’s office was a mess . . . and, lost in the shuffle, black women caught up in drugs, sometimes in prostitution, started to disappear.”

DCHA Statement on Park Morton shooting:

“DCHA owns and manages housing for low-income families. We’ve invested millions of dollars in enhancements, such as lighting and fences. In addition, we have invested in an infrastructure of more than 1,200 cameras across the city designed to supplement law enforcement’s efforts to investigate crimes when they occur. At the time of the shooting the onsite camera equipment was operating but the recording equipment was engaged in a software maintenance routine so the footage caught on camera was not recorded.

A psychopath walked to a playground and fired a weapon hitting two people, including a precious child, and countless others were traumatized. The perpetrator should be tracked down and jailed for a long time. We know MPD is doing their part with the criminal investigation and we’re doing what we can to assist them. Tragically, horrific reports like this are made in communities too often.”

-Richard White, Director of Public Affairs & Communications for DC Housing Authority”

The former Tibet Shop which hoped to become a liquor store will now become Heat Da Spot Coffee & More. The permit posted out front says it’ll be a deli and coffee shop:

Last week we heard the STIX food truck would be opening up a brick and mortar spot in Petworth. This caused a lot of excitement and folks were eagerly awaiting word of where. Sadly the news is not that sweet. Turns out they won’t be opening up in Petworth, nor will it be a completely new spot, they’ll be serving breakfast and lunch at Mothership located at 3301 Georgia Avenue, NW. Still good news but very different from the original impression.
