“Brookfield Properties, the global real estate services company, announced plans for its highly-anticipated Phase II of The Yards. Phase II will deliver 3.4 million SF of new development across 10 buildings that will provide office, mixed-income residential offerings, restaurants, retail, and public amenities. Notably, Phase II will introduce Yards Place, a main street that runs from the Navy Yard Metro to the new Diamond Teague park on the Anacostia riverfront. Yards Place will be curb-less, cobblestone and pedestrian-oriented, creating a highly walkable destination anchored by the Anacostia River and Nationals Park.

Once completed, The Yards will be the largest waterfront development in the DC Region, encompassing 48 acres, including 6 acres with water frontage, with a total of 2 million square feet of office space, 400,000 square feet of shopping and dining space, 3,400 residential units and 7.5 acres of public green space. Phase II of The Yards will deliver 1,260+ new multi-income residences, 1.8 million SF of office space, including exclusive waterfront office, and over 43K SF of newly reclaimed waterfront park space. “The First District is currently investigating a shooting that occurred in the Unit block of I Street, Southeast. At approximately 7:40 pm two African American suspects approached two victims in the garage of the building. One of which brandished a handgun. The suspects took the victims’ wallets and other belongings.

In the commission of the crime, one of the victims was shot in the lower extremities. (more…)

DDOT further honors Frederick Douglass and Black History Month with the release of Frederick Douglass Builds a Bridge, an interactive video for school-aged children that explains the process of building a bridge. What is the building with two tall smoke stacks at the western end of the actual Navy Yard, just across from La Famosa? For the several weeks I have lived nearby, there has been nothing to see here. Now, for the second day in a row, there is a huge amount of smoke coming out at the bottom of the building (not even out of the smoke stacks) and a very loud whir of machinery. (more…)

A new liquor license placard says: “New Retailer’s Class “C” Tavern featuring an upscale men’s grooming hair salon with a retail bar attached. Total Occupancy Load of 21 with seating for 21 patrons. Applicant is also applying for a Sidewalk Café Endorsement of 22 seats.”

“This evening at approximately 6:30 pm, a victim left their car running in the 1000 block of First Street SE while picking up food. An unknown suspect entered their vehicle and fled in an unknown direction.

The First District has seen an elevated level of car thefts–many of which involve cars that are left running or keys that are left in cars. Please always be aware of your surroundings and ensure that you turn off and lock your car even if only getting out for a moment.”

“This afternoon at approximately 4:55 pm, a victim left their car running while getting out to use an ATM. An unknown suspect entered their vehicle and fled in an unknown direction.”

“At approximately 6:35 AM [Sunday] this morning our officers responded the 1100 block of K St. SE for calls for the sound of gunshots. On scene investigation yielded evidence that suspects operating a blue sedan fired handguns and an assault rifle at a victim who was standing in the block. (more…)
