After more than 9 wonderful years, we will be closing our doors at the end of this month. December 23rd will be the last day of service at Little Red Fox and Sugar Fox.

This is not a business decision. Our little neighborhood operation has maneuvered around every bump and turn and continues to thrive thanks to our incredibly hard working staff, our incredibly supportive community, and countless regulars who visit us almost every single day. This is a personal decision by us, store owners Matt and Jena. In order to address complicated health issues and prioritize the well being of our family, we’ve had to make the very difficult decision to close. (more…)

“Child’s Play Toys & Books announces Rita Pin Ahrens as the new owner and chief happiness officer of its three stores in Washington, D.C., McLean, Va., and Arlington, Va. As a long-time customer, former teacher and community advocate, Ahrens is honored to continue the legacy of Child’s Play as a locally owned, neighborhood toy store that has brought happiness to families for 35 years.

Ahren’s company, Soksaby, purchased the store on September 1, 2022. In the Khmer language, “soksaby” means “health and happiness.” Soksaby is a woman- and minority-owned business based in Washington, D.C. (more…)

Scraping the bottom of the barrel vis a vis traffic calming on Connecticut

I noticed these flags underneath speed limit signs up and down Connecticut Ave. over the weekend.

A bit reminiscent of the good old (bad) days, when crossing the street for pedestrians was like a game of frogger. [It seems like a joke, but I swear to you this really was a thing. And it worked about as well as you might imagine.]

“Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating a traffic fatality involving a pedestrian that occurred on Sunday, May 8, 2022, in the 5300 block of Connecticut Avenue, Northwest.

The preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 9:48 pm, a Toyota Prius was traveling southbound in the 5300 block of Connecticut Avenue, Northwest, when the vehicle struck a pedestrian crossing the street. (more…)

“Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating two traffic fatalities resulting from a traffic crash involving a vehicle and a group of outdoor seated patrons that occurred on Friday, March 11, 2022, in the 5500 block of Connecticut Avenue, Northwest.

Preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 12:17 pm, a 2008 Subaru Forester was traveling south through a parking lot in the 5500 block of Connecticut Avenue, NW at an apparent high rate of speed. (more…)
