the notorious Dave Thomas Circle, the intersection of New York Avenue, NE, Florida Avenue, NE, and First Street, NE

From a press release:

“The NoMa BID and NPR have partnered with D.C. Walls to transform a former Wendy’s restaurant into a 360-degree piece of art. The building, located at D.C.’s infamous intersection, known locally as “Dave Thomas Circle,” has been selected as a painting site for this year’s edition of the D.C. Walls Festival. D.C. Walls Founder, Director, and curator Kelly Towles targeted the iconic space as an opportunity for this year’s festival, working in partnership with the NoMa BID. This mural will remain on view until the building is razed, which is expected in the first quarter of 2023 as part of the city’s plans for improving the intersection. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I am a resident here (flats 130 in NoMa), and posters have gone up everywhere since our building made an announcement (I’ve seen three different ones since last night) – our building is trying to tell us we can no longer have our packages delivered to our actual physical address. they have to be delivered to a “fetch address” which is a warehouse, and then you schedule a delivery time. Looks like Red Apron has closed up shop in Union Market. It’s still listed on their website but if you try to order it says “Online Ordering Unavailable”, not to mention the photo above. While there is still a location at The Roost in Hill East, the Penn Quarter location has been “temporarily” closed since September 2020.

Once the work is completed and the south entrance reopens, Metro will move to the north entrance on Florida Ave.

Construction will result in each entrance closing for approximately two weeks. (more…)

Update from Rappahannock Oyster Bar owner Travis Croxton via email:

“I just saw a story on PoPville from Sarah and wanted to clarify a couple things for Rappahannock Oyster Bar. Our last day is Saturday. The post states that “it doesn’t fit their business model anymore” – that’s out of context a little bit – it’s not our business model but rather is the only explanation the landlord gave to us (meaning “their business model”, not ours). They told us to vacate the premises and gave us two months notice, which puts us at the end of August. But we really want to get our great staff incorporated over to the Wharf and that’s why we may leave a little sooner.

The restaurant was doing great – this is by no means a financial decision whatsoever (and again, it was not our decision) – we had rebounded in an amazing way after the initial COVID onslaught and had better success than ever, so honestly the news hit us like a punch to the gut. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

We live in Near North East, in the middle of 4 empty houses and a massive restaurant. Rats are becoming an increasingly alarming problem in our alley and now our front yards. We have burrows, nests (including under the hood or our cars) and feces everywhere. The rats have trampled a “highway” across our grass, there are so many. Last night I set 7 traps outside on our property, our usual routine. This morning I found (more…)
