We received the first report at 10:09pm last night (Wednesday):

“Seriously, what’s with the explosion sounds (similar to a generator blowing) that we’ve heard several times in Fort Totten? The power has gone out several times again.”

“Same! We are without power near Fort Totten metro – two or three huge booms tonight. Same thing earlier this morning, but luckily power just flickered then.”

“The loud bangs are continuing. In the past the loud bangs came first, then we lost power. Tonight I only heard the bangs after we lost power. Intermittent sirens somewhere nearby.”

“It’s a transformer or some power line on 12th between Allison and Buchanen, it’s been exploding every couple days. Pepco was working on it earlier today after it happened, but just happened again minutes ago” (more…)

Ed. Note: We spoke about some basements getting battered in Edgewood here.

“Dear PoPville,

We moved into our brand new construction house in Brightwood/Manor Park 6 days ago and had some major flooding (2-3 feet of water in the basement). The alley and yard funneled directly down into our basement. The drain in our yard and at the bottom of the stairs leading into our basement did nothing and neither did the sump pump (that had a battery backup). (more…)

Cassandra Hetherington is a a volunteer for Uptown Main Street. She wrote about Maria Villalta and Pica Taco here.

Thanks again to Cassandra Hetherington for sharing with us:

“Musicians Jamaal and David sip beer and discuss their upcoming performance at a nearby coffee house. Due to the dark cloudy skies and threat of rain, Jamaal left his guitar at home so for now, they are unable to practice playing their instruments together. Jamaal and David, both residents of Manor Park, met at Jackie Lee’s many moons ago and quickly became friends. This is exactly the kind of neighborhood bar Nick Schieber, Jason Crafton, and Amanda Kelsey hoped to create when they opened Jackie Lee’s on Kennedy Street NW.

Having moved to D.C. from Florida a decade ago, Nick spent the majority of his adult life working in restaurants; most recently at the Red Derby on 14th Street NW. Jackie Lee’s relaxed and welcoming vibe, a reflection of its owners, has attracted a diverse clientele of mostly neighbors into this restaurant and bar. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

The motorcyclist that died in this crash was Romain Picou. Romain died Wednesday morning driving to work on Kansas Avenue NW, when a car turning left from Madison entered the one lane road and Romain’s lane. Romain hit the passenger door and was thrown off of his motorcycle. The driver of the vehicle was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Romain died from his.

Romain was my friend and a brother. I simply don’t have the words to convey the character, class, and charisma he carried with him everywhere he went. His light was snuffed too soon and while it breaks my heart, I am honored to have known him. (more…)
