“Commissary’s third annual Latkepalooza, an all-you-can-eat latke and fried donut bar, will be held Monday, December 19th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tickets are $22 per person, and include bottomless access to a traditional, sweet potato and zucchini latkes as well as the donuts, and can be purchased online or at the door. There is also a $38 ticket option (online advance purchase only – not available at the door), which include two drinks from a selection of holiday specialty cocktails or House wine and draft beer. Drinks can also be ordered a la carte. Ten percent of proceeds from this event will benefit the Jewish Food Experience.”

Looks like the new Shake Shack coming to Logan Circle will have outdoor seating wrapping around both 14th and Rhode Island. The just posted liquor license application says:
“New Restaurant. Sidewalk Café with 81 seats. Total Occupancy Load of 138.”
and hours are listed as: “Sunday through Saturday 11 am –11 pm”

“The annual Logan Circle Holiday House Tour is Sunday, December 4, 2016, from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.
Plan to join in a tour of traditional and contemporary architecture and interior design, and the always warming Wassail Reception at Studio Theatre.
Imagine yourself inside a giant organ. No, not that kind of organ. A pipe organ. Now hold on to that thought. Each year neighbors and visitors have come away delighted by the stunning architecture, unique interior design, world-class art, and the wonderful company of fellow house enthusiasts. And this year won’t be any different. Well, it’s going to be a little different. As part of this year’s tour, The Church of the Ascension and Saint Agnes on Massachusetts Avenue at 12th Street NW, a Gothic Revival brick structure completed enough to use by December 1844, will be inviting guests into their new organ loft, and, even into the organ itself. It’s the perfect place to hear the story of how the new organ came to be, after its predecessor fell – thankfully not on a Sunday – into the pews below.
We can’t forget about the houses, of course. The self-guided tour includes eleven properties at nine locations, and yes, as always a Wassail Reception with refreshments, and raffle at the Studio Theatre located at 14th and P Streets NW. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
Was walking home on P b/t 15th and 16th just before 7pm tonight [Sunday] when a guy on a bike rode up behind me. Like the other poster mentioned, his bike had a ton of lights on it – was really distinctive. Weird that a pervert like that would ride such a distinctive bike! Thought I might be in his way on the sidewalk but he slowed down and said every week he does a scavenger hunt…there’s $500 at stake, and could I help him with the scavenger hunt. Then he took out his phone and showed me writing on the phone. Read it very quickly but it said something about taking photos of the bottom of a woman’s foot. I said no and walked away and when I turned around he had crossed the street and was talking to some other women with the same shtick.”

“Rant: I had a really strange experience last night (Sunday) at 8th and Florida. Wondering if anybody else has ever had this happen? A guy was being friendly with my dog. He then asked me for a favor. He was doing a scavenger hunt for charity (“cancer”) and needed pictures of the bottoms of people’s feet. I agreed he could take a quick photo of my foot but was quickly put off when he seemed to take multiple shots (they were “blurry”) and then asked me to point my toes like a ballerina. I put my shoes back on and walked away with no further trouble from the guy. This seems really strange.”

“At approximately 9:45pm on Thursday night, two subjects were observed shooting handguns in the 1400 block of R Street NW. An alert member of the community called 911 and gave a detailed description of the subjects. Responding units were quickly able to locate and apprehend both subjects in the area. Two handguns were recovered subsequent to the arrests of the two adult males. Fortunately, nobody was injured as a result of the reckless behavior by these subjects.
By calling 911 and providing the officers with a detailed description, the community member was critical in these successful apprehensions. This is another example of the outstanding relationship that the MPD (and the Third District specifically) values with our communities.

“Dear PoPville,
Yesterday I was verbally assaulted and threatened in a way I had been fearing ever since the election campaign dove into racist, misogynistic, anti-immigrant rhetoric. I have never felt more vulnerable as a woman, a Latino, and an immigrant. I never thought I would be in this situation, but it did happen to a friend and me today, so I thought I would share because first of all, in case there were any doubts, I want people to know this is happening in DC, and also because I wished I had had the opportunity to thank the very brave young man who put himself in danger, stood up to this bully, and allowed us to escape from a very dangerous situation.
It was around 4:30pm and my best friend and I were on our way to the movies. We were on bikeshare rides, nearing 14th and R NW, talking in Spanish as we slowed down for the red light. All of a sudden a man started to yell at us, telling us to “shut up”, to “speak American”. At first I thought he was just crazy, then I thought he was drunk, and then unfortunately I realized he was neither. (more…)
