From the famous 2010 fight

Washington DC Snowball Fight Association is calling for a big TITANic battle today:

“Winter storm TITAN is set to bring some serious snow to the DC area on Monday, March 3rd – an extraordinary event for this late in the season. So let’s celebrate with a Titan-ic snowball fight! (at 2:00pm)

A few things that we’d like to remind everyone who shows up for our traditional rumble in front of the Smithsonian Castle:

• Invite your friends!
• Please follow any instructions given by the Metropolitan Police Department or the U.S. National Park Police
• Please respect the media when they’re working, especially please don’t target camera operators
• It’s probably best to keep pets and small children out of the battle zone
• This is meant to be fun! So play fair, DON’T THROW ICE, and wear any protective gear you think you need!
• Pelting moving vehicles could cause accidents, SO DON’T DO IT!
• Anyone who behaves recklessly is responsible for the consequences. Safety is important to us!

See you in the Circle! LOCATION CHANGE: Due to ice buildup in Dupont Circle, we will meet on the National Mall, right north of the Smithsonian Castle, with easy access to the Smithsonian and Archives Metro stations.”

“Dear PoPville,

I was walking on the 1700 block of Swann Street NW a few minutes ago and came across a car that someone had broken into. The pillow and sheet were pulled completely out of the car but the suitcase inside looked intact (hopefully it is). I’m hoping that the owner is a PoPville reader, or maybe someone out there knows whose car this is and they can come salvage what’s left. For anyone wondering, I didn’t call MPD as I once tried to to flag down a MPD officer in a similar situation and he said that I’d have to call 911 and wait there for a cruiser to respond. Unfortunately I can’t do that today.”

Ed. Note: I was going to have a post simply showing all of the statues with people on horseback around town but the contributor who was going to do it had to back out. So then I thought, ‘what the hell’, let’s see who these people are. And here we are.

For Vol. 1 let’s check out General Winfield Scott conveniently located in Scott Circle:

Known as “Old Fuss and Feathers” and the “Grand Old Man of the Army,” he served on active duty as a general longer than any other man in American history, and many historians rate him the best American commander of his time. Over the course of his 53-year career, he commanded forces in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, the Mexican-American War, the Second Seminole War, and, briefly, the American Civil War, conceiving the Union strategy known as the Anaconda Plan that would be used to defeat the Confederacy. He served as Commanding General of the United States Army for twenty years, longer than any other holder of the office.

A national hero after the Mexican-American War, he served as military governor of Mexico City. Such was his stature that, in 1852, the United States Whig Party passed over its own incumbent President of the United States, Millard Fillmore, to nominate Scott in that year’s United States presidential election. At a height of 6’5″, he remains the tallest man ever nominated by a major party. Scott lost to Democrat Franklin Pierce in the general election, but remained a popular national figure, receiving a brevet promotion in 1856 to the rank of lieutenant general, becoming the first American since George Washington to hold that rank.

This morning we learned that a new Greek restaurant would opening up next door to the new Noodles and Company on 19th Street. Thanks to a reader for sending word that the restaurant is out of NYC and called GRK Fresh Greek. Check out their Menu here.

Their website says:

“From the people who brought you drama, democracy, and alarm clocks, we now present the simple perfection of GRK. Our new take on classic Greek food brings you fresh flavors like you’ve never tasted.”

Earlier this month a reader sent word that Noodles and Company would soon be opening at 19th and L St, NW. They are having an invite only mock service today and open for real tomorrow.

Perhaps of greater interest is news of who is coming to the vacant space next door closest to Science Club – a permit on the door says that it will be a new restaurant, possibly to be called Greek Fresh. The workers also said they heard it would be a Greek restaurant. This is actually a very bold move considering one of DC’s best Greek options, Greek Deli, is located just down the block at 1120 19th St, NW. Updates as the buildout progresses and more info is know.
