The 1800 Cafe closed their little spot at 1800 N St, NW back in Oct. 2011. Finally some phenomenal news as to who’s taking over the space – one of my favorites Surfside! This is the little space right next to the recently opened STK Steakhouse on the N Street side.

Surfside currently has a restaurant in Glover Park at 2444 Wisconsin Ave, NW.  You can see their menu here. Their website says:

“Surfside is a fresh breeze on the restaurant scene where you can get great grilled tacos, salads and entrees inspired by the beach cuisines of the world.

Surfside is all about laid-back, simple preparations with grilled steak, fish, shrimp and chicken with a wide array of fresh vegetables served on a colorful plate in a bright open space. Perfect for a quick bite or a gathering with friends – great for families and kids. Discover our rooftop deck and the authentic bold flavors of our fresh-made salsas, moles, curries and the best guacamole in town. Enjoy a frozen margarita or tropical blended drink with your meal or choose from an eclectic mix of international beers and wines.”

From Dupont Circle Citizens Association:

“Councilmember Jack Evans gave us an update on the legislation session and budget, including the news that $10M had been appropriated for a park covering Connecticut Avenue where it cuts under Dupont Circle from Q Street.”

Greater Greater Washington reported:

“[ANC Commissioner Mike] Feldstein said, “The next step is getting advice on what works in parks like that, and getting community input.” The park could break ground as early as October if plans can be approved, Lipinsky [Evans’communications director] noted.”

From a press release:

“After eight years of operation, Urbana will close to the public beginning Tuesday, July 1 July 14th, to undergo a $600,000 interior renovation for a refreshed look, reopening for business in early late August.

Urbana will retain its sleek, urban ambiance while doubling its bar area, relocating its private dining room, refreshing its P Street patio area, and incorporating other design elements into a more free-flowing floor plan. The design concept for the renovation was led by GrizForm Design Architects, an award-winning design firm based in Washington, DC that has designed spaces for Fiola, Estadio and Cava. (more…)

A couple weeks ago we learned the shuttered sports bar, The Gryphon, would transform into a “Meat & Raw Bar Social House” on Connecticut Ave just south of Dupont Circle. Their website now says:

“The Meat & Raw Bar Food Experience

The Gryphon is a new dining concept in Washington, DC from the owners of Lost Society, a boutique steakhouse on the corner of 14th St. and U St., NW.

Just as Lost Society changed the traditional perception of a steakhouse, the Gryphon is designed to change the perception of dining with friends, family and neighbors.

The Gryphon is a Meat & Raw Bar Social House. These words encompass the entire dining experience presented at the Gryphon.”

On their facebook page the description continues:

“The food experience is “meat-centric” with a heavy emphasis on beef. But the menu includes a variety of options for pork, lamb, seafood and, of course, an outstanding oyster based raw bar that includes shrimp, lobster and clams.

Our philosophy, is to bring out the experience of enjoying the meats and other food on the menu through two things:

The Preparation – such as curing, grilling, broiling, roasting and aging; and

The Presentation – EVERYTHING is plated to share or “pre-cut.” We encourage all of our guests to order with that in mind.

Social dining provides ours guest with exceptional food and drink (specially crafted cocktails, selected beers and wine) and puts them together in a lively, fun, and energetic atmosphere at the Gryphon. The Gryphon is our “house” and our guests should feel as if they were invited to a well planned neighborhood dinner party with their closest friends, family and neighbors. To us, this is more than just getting food out at a restaurant, it’s the experience of dining together and being connected to one another through the food and drink. Hence the term, Social House.

As such, sharing is the aspect that completes the dining experience. That experience is incomplete without friends, family and neighbors. Effectively, the food and drink connect us to one another, and we are connected to one another through the food and drink.

Here at the Gryphon we encourage eating and drinking to socialize and socializing through eating and drinking. Whether it’s through dinner, lunch, brunch or just a drink at the bar, the Gryphon is designed to be a friendly, engaging and energetic place where friends, family and neighbors can regularly meet to catch up and/or celebrate, or just make new friends altogether.”

And they’ve posted their new menu outside:

Last week we learned Malgudi’s southern Indian restaurant had closed on P street in the former Cafe Luna space under Heritage India. At that time we heard it would become either a Mexican spot or some sort of bistro/cafe. Maybe a combo – Mexican Cafe? Thanks to a reader for sending the photo above. More on Cafe Mirasol when it becomes available.
