Bernardo O’Higgins was a Chilean independence leader who, together with José de San Martín, freed Chile from Spanish rule in the Chilean War of Independence. He was a wealthy landowner of Spanish and Irish ancestry. Although he was the second Supreme Director of Chile (1817–1823), he is considered one of Chile’s founding fathers, as he was the first holder of this title to head a fully independent Chilean state.”

Update on the Jenni Bick “opening in about two weeks” status in Dupont from GTMARCHITECTS:

“GTM Architects, an award-winning residential and commercial architectural firm, recently announced that it designed the first brick and mortar retail space for Jenni Bick Fine Custom Journals at 1300 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Washington, DC. The formerly online only handmade journal business is moving into the Dupont Circle location previously occupied by Riccardi Clothier.

GTM Architects Partner Clare Marino and Project Coordinator Lauren Pacheco worked with owners Jenni and Robby Bick to create a space that accentuates the products, which include personalized, handmade and custom journals, notebooks and albums. Marino and Pacheco kept the organic and natural design aesthetic of the online store by incorporating a neutral, modern décor in the retail space that includes wood shelves, hardwood flooring and light-colored walls. Extensive shelving will showcase an array of colorful merchandise, while freestanding tables and shelves provide a place for seasonal and specialty items. Customers can review the products, select fonts and text for personalization, and watch the embossing process. (more…)

“What’s happening to the Sunoco at P St NW?”

“Here’s the story so far:

At the end of November, DC’s Historic Planning Office (HPO) issued its recommendation to the Preservation Review Board (HPRB) to decline Marx Realty’s plan to convert the landmarked service station into a MUD. The extant structure would have been relocated on the site and become some form of retail. (The Fine Arts Commission had previously given its approval.)

December 6, Marx tells the Sunoco to get out.

Yesterday (Tuesday 1/3) it’s emptied out and fence up. I haven’t been over there yet today to see what kind of progress has been made. A neighbor sent a video from this morning showing the canopies over the former pumps being demolished. (more…)

We will gather on the west side of Dupont Circle at 8am for coffee & tea and parade down to the National Mall at 10am. Along the way we’ll hand out 4,200 joints of legally grown cannabis!
