Downtown
Yesterday many folks were dismayed to learn that Yo! Sushi had permanently closed in Union Station. Many took to twitter asking @YOSushi why? @johnsolit shares with us an interesting response:
“Yes Union Station has closed due to changes with our strategic partner. Opening in downtown DC by end of this year!”
Previously we learned another Yo! Sushi was planned for 675 H Street, NW in Chinatown but that deal fell through in Aug. 2013 and that space is now slated to become a Sports Zone Elite. I’ve inquired where in Downtown DC they are planning to open and will update as more info becomes available.
Back in Feb. we saw the first photos of demo starting at the Third Church of Christ building at 16th and I St, NW. Thanks to katecon for sending these updated ones from this morning:

“Have you ever looked at your cell phone case and wondered how it was made? There’s a good chance it was made from a 3D printer… The same kind of machine that can “print” a jet engine thanks to advanced manufacturing. For the next two weeks, GE is coming to town to show the District how these types of advanced manufacturing machines work. And we’d like to show you before the rest of the public gets to see it… You’ll get to engrave your iPhone or iPad and print your own phone case, if you want! There will be a lot of fun things to photograph.
Part of a global tour, each Garage is a pop-up lab that provides really neat hands-on experience with manufacturing technologies that most of us don’t have access to (e.g., laser cutters, 3D printers, injection molders, etc.). Throughout the next two weeks, Garages will be open to the public, so people can walk through the space and actually use these machines that are revolutionizing the country’s manufacturing processes.

The general public will be invited to visit the space and interact with the technologies starting Friday the 21st and running through April 9, 2014. Visitors will be able to engage in on-site activities, ranging from building a case for their smartphone using GE’s 3D printers to attending 101 workshops held in the space. ”

A permit has been issued for Del Frisco Steakhouse which we first heard about back in Nov. 2012:

In June of 2012 Del Frisco’s Grille opened in the long vacant former Les Halles space at 1201 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. You can see the Steakhouse menus here.
A couple of weeks ago I also posted some retail scuttlebutt about a Hermes, Gucci, D&G, Tiffany&Co as possible tenants. Here’s an update from a good source – No D&G, No Gucci but yes to a Louis Vuitton and a Paul Stuart and a Tiffany & co is still possible.

“Acclaimed Chef/Owner Richard Sandoval is pleased to announce his newest venue, Toro Toro, will open March 31st at 1300 I Street, NW. The name Toro Toro plays on the Japanese word for tuna and the Spanish word for bull – a Pan Latin steakhouse with a generous selection of small plates.
Sandoval and his partner Ivan Iricanin recently tapped Chef de Cuisine Stephen Hertzel to oversee Toro Toro’s kitchen. He will be preparing a flavorful variety of hot and cold small plates, along with an exceptional selection of steaks. The menu will also note where meat and seasonal ingredients are sourced with an emphasis on supporting local and regional farms. A great spot for “power lunch,” guests can anticipate menu item ranging range from $4 to $16 for small plates, salads and sandwiches and $26 to $45 for steak entrées. Toro Toro will also offer a weekday lunch buffet priced at $25 per person.
Toro Toro will also showcase an innovative beverage program, spearheaded by Sandoval’s National Beverage Director Rob Day. Final former Filene’s finally filled. Well soon anyway. Signs recently went up at 1133 Connecticut Avenue, NW by the Mayflower hotel. Filene’s closed back in 2011.
