13th and F Street, NW

Back in June M&S Grill closed “For a Remodel” at the corner of the 13th and F St, NW near the National Press Building. Washington Business Journal reports on the replacement:

“We now have the answer to what will fill the shuttered M&S Grill restaurant space at the corner of 13th and F streets NW: Mastro’s, an upscale steakhouse and seafood restaurant new to the Washington region.”

Mastro’s website says:

“Mastro’s collection of sophisticated, classic Steakhouses and Ocean Club Seafood locations are recognized for their combination of world-class service, highly acclaimed cuisine, and live entertainment in an elegant yet energetic atmosphere. A truly unparalleled dining experience…”

Earlier this week @CityCenterDC tweeted the photo above:

“Look who popped up at #CityCenterDC today! Plan your @katespadeny purchases at http://www.katespade.com!”

And last week when we noted coming soon signage for Longchamp, a reader commented some interesting scuttlebutt about who else is coming:

“Hermes, Gucci, D&G, Tiffany&Co”

Streets of Washington, written by John DeFerrari, covers some of DC’s most interesting buildings and history. John is the author of Historic Restaurants of Washington, D.C.: Capital Eats, published by the History Press, Inc. and also the author of Lost Washington DC.

Running a fashionable supper club in the 1920s was not for the fainthearted. Certainly there was plenty of money to be made, and club owners outdid themselves to create the most exotic destinations imaginable. But these were the days of Prohibition, and the “dry” agents were always on the look-out for places where people seemed to be having a little too much fun. One such place was Le Paradis, one of the DC’s ritziest 1920s nightspots, located at 1 Thomas Circle NW.

Le Paradis (1931)
The Le Paradis at 1 Thomas Circle, with its rooftop garden, in 1931 (Author’s collection).

Le Paradis was the creation of legendary impresario and bandleader Meyer Davis (1893-1976), who was born in nearby Ellicott City, Maryland, and moved to the District as a child with his family. Davis loved music from an early age, starting his own five-member band (which played for $25 an evening), after his high-school orchestra rejected him. In 1914, while he was a law student at George Washington University, his band was breaking new ground playing music for hot new dances like the bunny hug, the turkey trot, and the grizzly bear. Soon his group had a gig playing lunches and dinners at the Willard Hotel, and Davis quickly settled on the supper club scene as his preferred métier. Tall, slim, and balding, Davis had an urbane air that appealed to his wealthy clientele, and his energy and verve in twirling his conductor’s baton seemed to always bring the audience to their feet. In later years, he would be dubbed the “Toscanini of society band leaders.” (more…)

Loews hotels previously announced:

“Award-winning chef and Iron Chef America star, Jose Garces, will be opening an Argentinean steakhouse inside the Loews Madison Hotel in early 2014.

After recently undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation, Loews Madison Hotel is excited to be home to the future restaurant of renowned chef Garces. Since opening his first restaurant, Amada in 2005, Chef Jose Garces has emerged as one of the nation’s leading chefs and restaurateurs. Today, he is the owner and operator of more than a dozen restaurants in five cities. He is the 2009 winner of the James Beard Foundation’s “Best Chef Mid-Atlantic” award and one of only a few chefs in the country to hold the coveted title of Iron Chef.”

Thanks to a reader for sending word about the new coming soon signage. This is the space formerly home to The Federalist restaurant.

“Dear PoPville,

I was almost hit by the car in the picture tonight near the 1300 block of Pennsylvania NW. I heard a loud crashing sound, saw a car heading straight for me followed by police cars. Fortunately, the light pole (folded over) stopped the car before it hit me. I haven’t been able to gather any additional information about the accident. Does anyone else know what happened? Why were the cops chasing this car? Are the passengers okay?”

Ed. Note: I’ve put in a query with MPD and will update if they have any info they can share.

UPDATE: MPD says this was a suspected DUI and the vehicle was speeding. The driver was transported to the hospital with non life threatening injuries.

We are interested in hearing your input on restoring and transforming Franklin Park, specifically your comments on the proposed concept designs alternatives.

GCDC will offer two different experiences: a daytime menu of grilled cheese sandwiches, soups and ‘tots’ for the busy afternoon crowd, and a nighttime menu of composed dishes, elegant cheese plates, cocktails and wine flights for the evening crowd.
