“Dear PoP,

Just wanted to drop you a line about recent day time thefts/muggings in Columbia Heights, maybe you can warn your readers to be extra careful! This past Saturday, at about 2:00pm, in broad daylight, I was robbed at the Exxon station at 14th and Parkwood in Columbia Heights. I was putting gas in my car when a guy pulled up next to me, which I didnt pay attention to because its a gas station and cars are always coming in/out. Another guy jumped out of the passenger side, reached into my car and grabbed my purse, and they took off before I could do anything about it (luckily for me I had my cell phone and my wallet in my hand at the time, so the jokes on them). But when the police came to take my statement, they said the same two guys had struck at least one other time that afternoon in C.H. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up!”

“Dear PoP,

Have you heard anything about the car fire that happened last night on the 3200 bock of Hiatt Place NW. I live across 16th Street from Powell Rec Center and just before 10pm last night I heard a huge boom and when I looked out my window I could see rapidly rising flames on a parked car. I also thought I heard 4-5 gunshots in the following minutes between the explosion and the arrival of the fire trucks.”

I haven’t seen anything from MPD or DCFIREEMS yet. Anyone else who lives around here see what happened? I’ll be sure to update as more info becomes available.

I feel like I’ve been tracking this home for years. I really like how the glassed in fire escape looks though I’m not a huge fan of the brick top. Anyway, I noticed that the building got named – The Bernshire.

It says it was Est. 2005 but I can’t seem to recall if they’ve ever been listed on the market. Anyone know if anyone’s living in the building yet? Is the Est. 2005 simply when the renovations began?

They tweet:

“Here’s a photo from a partial roadway collapse on Meridian Place, NW. The 1400 block is closed.”

And here’s an odd occurrence from FEMS:

“FEMS responded to a report of an explosion at 5201 Connecticut Ave NW # 608. Explosion was due to bug fumigation spray igniting the pilot light on the stove. Windows in unit 608 were shattered. There were no injuries and no relocations. DCRA was notified, responded and declared the building safe.”

I’ve always been a big fan of Wonderland (11th and Kenyon Streets, NW) but I think the real love comes from our shared love of old city signs. (Their cousin Looking Glass Lounge, at Georgia and Princeton, (a PoP advertiser) also has many great signs). Anyway, I’ve been meaning to put the amazing one from above up for a while. It’s is a real sign that Wonderland’s owner Matthew salvaged.

Also of note, which I surprisingly just learned, is that they have the original Nob Hill sign (former occupant of the building) on the ceiling toward the bathrooms and kitchen:

The Columbia Heritage Trail unveiling was a great success and managed to beat the rain on Saturday afternoon. The turnout was spectacular. Kojo Nnamdi from WAMU (88.5) was the emcee and there were speeches by Ward 3 Council Member Mary Cheh and Ward 1 Council Member Jim Graham (among others).

Kojo Nnamdi once caught a fish…

The festivities took place at the new Columbia Heights Plaza and the actual unveiling took place just south on 14th St. in front of The Heights restaurant:

Signs are are up and down 14th Street and other spots as well (one is outside of Wonderland). You can find a complete map of the trail here.

Thanks to a reader for sending:

“Have you seen this art on Newton St. between 14th and 16th? Any ideas on its origin? Hardly your standard dilapidated building graffiti.”

Anyone know who the artist is?

On top of yesterday and this morning’s shootings I’ve just received word that there was a shooting on the 1300 block of Euclid Street, NW at 6:19pm Saturday night. A DC ALERT message went out saying it was 1300 block of Fairmont but unless there were two shootings within minutes of each other it was probably on Euclid. I’m told a Howard University student went to the hospital and it seems like the shooting was random. More info as it becomes available from the authorities.

Ed. Note: I’ll be on Fox 5 News at 10pm tonight speaking about neighborhood violence.

UPDATE from MPD:

“At about 6;00 pm an adult female was shot in the leg while in the 1300 block of euclid St. There is no known motive at this time. Anyone with information is asked to call 202 727-9099.

The flier says:

“A stunning example of a fine urban row house. Recent renovation shows the possibilities of a 1924 home turned into a livable piece of art. How about FOUR? Four levels, Four bedrooms, Four bathrooms. .. but still one of a kind. Maple and concrete floors, high ceilings, recessed lighting, In-Law-Suite(appt), garage parking, top of the line finishes throughout.”

More info and photos found here.

I’m pretty sure I’ve featured this house as house of the day before so it’s pretty cool to get a look at the inside. It’s a pretty serious renovation, dying to know what you guys think. Do you think $769,900 is a realistic asking price for this 4 bed/4 bath? I’m thinking it’s a bit on the high side.
