The following is a guest post written by Columbia Heights resident, Jimmy.

Walking west on Columbia Rd, between 14th and 15th streets, I followed the modest sign tucked behind a chain link fence that read “Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Thai Boxing [this way]” to the basement level of Casa del Pueblo. Here I met Nakapan Phungephorn. If ever there was a guy I did not want to meet in a dark alley, Nakapan (or “Nak” for short) was him – and here I was, walking down that dark alley to meet him.

Nak holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a brown belt in Judo, is one of the DC area’s few certified Muay Thai instructors, and has fought successfully at the national and international levels in both Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts as an amateur and professional. Fortunately for me, Nak is as nice and welcoming as he is decorated.

Nakapan is the founder and one of several highly trained instructors at the BETA Academy Martial Arts studio. Tired of trekking out to Virginia for training, Nak and his wife, Melanie (both DC residents), chose to open their own studio in Columbia Heights for its proximity to metro and bus lines as well as its high level of foot traffic. Their primary vision is for BETA Academy to become the “go to” center for Thai Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Mixed Martial Arts training in the District. The move is paying off, as business is clearly booming.

Additionally, Nak recognizes the public concern regarding at-risk youth in the neighborhood. Not one to sit on the sidelines, Nak says, “Our ultimate goal is to develop a government funded youth program targeting local at-risk youth. The hope is to get kids off the street and channel their energy into a constructive activity while at the same time instilling character building values such as self-discipline, respect, and self confidence. These values are the core of our growing kids program which we currently offer to the general public at a discounted rate.” Continues after the jump. (more…)

From MPD:

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch Special Victims Unit have announced that an arrest has been made in the shooting death of 9-year-old Oscar Fuentes which occurred on Saturday, November 14, 2009, in the 1400 block of Columbia Road, NW. At approximately 5:50 a.m. on Tuesday, November 17, 2009, 26-year-old Josue Pena of no fixed address was arrested in Hyattsville, Maryland by members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. Mr. Pena has been charged with First Degree Murder While Armed in the homicide of Oscar Fuentes.

On Saturday, November 14, 2009, at approximately 9:35 p.m., officers from Third District were called to an apartment building in the 1400 block of Columbia Road, NW, to investigate the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered a juvenile male inside suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim, who was identified as 9-year-old Oscar Fuentes of the above address, was transported by personnel from the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department to an area hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead.”

I’ve recieved a number of emails forwarded from readers saying:

“Due to MPD activity the 1400 block of Columbia Rd. N.W. will be closed to traffic avoid the area.

Sent by DC HSEMA to e-mail, pagers, cell phones….powered by Cooper Notification RSAN”

More info as it becomes available.

From CM Jim Graham regarding the horrifying murder of a 9 year old Sat. night on Columbia Road:

“The Mayor and I spoke with the family of Oscar Fuentes this morning. The family and survivors would appreciate donations.

Donations may be sent to my office:

1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Suite 105
Washington D.C. 20004.

I will send all checks to the family. Checks should be made payable to M. Fuentes.”

I just saw the following on the Columbia Heights Listserv:

“I live in the 1300 block of Girard and got a message in my mailbox over the weekend that there is a meeting this Thursday concerning potentially changing Girard and Euclid (or Fairmont, can’t remember which) into one way streets. Is this seriously under consideration? Anyone have any information?”

This is the first I’ve heard of this so it’s not clear if this under consideration (I’ll see what Graham’s office has to say). But I’m curious if there are any folks who think this would be a good idea?

This mural is by the basketball courts and is so large it’s difficult to get it all in one shot. Part of it even comes off the wall onto the floor:

The mural is sponsored by Words, Beats & Life, the same folks who recently completed the new mural at 14th and Randolph.

The artists commissioned for the Girard Park project are Maxx Moses, Aniekan, and the apprentice is Isaiah Aladejobi.

I received numerous emails about a police presence at 14th and Columbia. Here’s the word from CM Graham:

“I have just returned from a tragic scene at 14th and Columbia. Just before 10 PM, a nine year old boy was shot dead in the presumed safety of his apartment at 1433 Columbia Road. AT this time, it appears that there was some kind of fight in the hallway, shots were fired, one of which entered the apartment and killed this boy. I have the name of the boy (who happens to be Latino) but I am not releasing it since I do not know whether the entire family has been notified.

Chief Lanier and Mayor Fenty–who were both on the scene– stated that there are persons in custody.

MDP was out in force in the neighborhood, it being an All Hands on Deck weekend. Police were on the scene immediately.”

And in other CH crime news there seems to have been a huge police presence near Wonderland at 11th and Kenyon. A reader writes:

“Passed by Wonderland Ballroom about an hour ago (around 8:30pm Sat. night) and there were 4-5 police cars (some unmarked) with a healthy amount of uniformed and plain-clothes officers.”

There is some speculation among readers that it may have been a drug bust robbery with 3 suspects arrested. A very sad night all around. More details as they become available.

Thanks to all for writing in. Senor Chicken on Park Road just west of 14th St. has officially opened up on Friday. We’ll follow up on how the food is later. But if anyone checks it out be sure to let us know what you think.

“Dear PoP,

I just saw (last week) four kids ages maybe 12-14 at the Columbia Heights metro station in front of Potbelly’s with bolt cutters stealing one bike and trying to cut another one lose. There were plenty of people around which did not seem to disturb them. I just happened to walk by and they definitely realized I was noticing their ‘work’, but I was totally unsure how to react; whether to confront them or call the police. In the end I realized calling 911 would not get the cops there in time, and I was afraid of consequences directly approaching them. Where is the police when you need them? In the end I saw a police car in front of the target and ran over there, but there was no officer around. Maybe that threatened the kids as they were taking off once I got to the police car and left the attempt on the second bike unfinished (I got to meet the owner later on coincidentally, as she just came back and told her about her luck), but the other bike got taken. How would you react in such a situation and I am curious to hear other peoples suggestions on what could have been done maybe also to keep the other bike from being taken away?

I guess I will keep storing my different bikes with me in my flat.”

This is a very tough question. I think if it is daytime and there are many people around, it would be ok to confront them and say something like, “hey what are you doing? What’s going on?” or something like that. The video up top was done by two brothers in NYC who show exactly how easy it is to steal a bike without anyone saying anything in broad daylight. What do you guys recommend in this situation?
