“Dear PoP,

We live next to the firehouse on 14th and Newton. Woke up this morning to see that they’re flying a black “don’t tread on me” flag beneath the American flag. While there is historical significance to this flag, I suspect somebody is trying to make a political statement of some kind. Which begs the question, are individual employees of the DC government allowed to make public political statements on city property? This would not be considered ethical with the Federal Government.

Firehouse Neighbor”

Hmm, what do you guys think – is the a political statement?

“Dear PoP,

It’s a neighborhood-wide yard sale involving both homes and sales in several parks (sales run from morning through early afternoon). The Park Square Triangle will also feature a donation location and information from several community groups (afternoon), including the Columbia Heights Day Initiative and the Columbia Heights Community Marketplace. Tivoli North Business Association is also hosting activities at a local park.”

“Dear PoP,

Do you know what happened the Rita’s Custard and Italian Ice in Columbia Heights? It was due to open on March 20th—but now it seems like it is closed permanently. Do you know anything more?

Rita’s will be missed!”

Sorry for the delay in answering this question but I wanted to get to it now because I saw a tweet from theheightslife saying that Rita’s in Columbia Heights Plaza has closed. Yes it absolutely has closed. But all hope is not lost for Rita fans. We have to consider this scuttlebutt, I haven’t been able to confirm yet, but another reader spoke with some workers in the Rita’s on Sunday and they said that they were relocating across the street, most likely into a DC USA space. I’ll be sure to update if and when I can confirm.

Seems like we’ve been hearing a lot of scuttlebutt about buildings in Columbia Heights, first the vacant one at 11th and Monroe then the other vacant one at 11th and Park and now this one at 1346 Park Road, NW (next to the Dry Cleaners and across the street from the Giant).

A reader writes that bids are due today for the 24 unit building and that: “They are selling it as a total rehab and upgrade for condo conversion.”

More info as it becomes available.

From an email:

“Our third community meeting to discuss the improvements for the park at 11th and Monroe Streets park is a week away. Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 31, 7:00 pm, Mount Rona Church. We hope to use the feedback from this meeting to refine our design before putting the project out to bid.

Visit DPR’s website here for this project for information about prior meetings.”

The former school is located at Georgia Ave between Columbia Rd. and Irving Street, NW. We learned there would not be a parking lot on the site here. From an email:

“The Bruce Monroe Site Interim Use Subcommittee of the Georgia Avenue Community Development Task Force will meet with Councilman Graham, the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, and the DC Office of Planning to disclose and discuss the community’s suggestions for use of the Bruce Monroe site. Please see the information below for the time, location and date of the meeting. Bring your neighbors with you.

What: Bruce Monroe Interim Use Plans
Where: Emergence Community Arts Collective, 733 Euclid Street, NW
When: Wednesday, March 31, 2010
Time: 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM
Who Should be There: Community Members, Businesses, Parents and Youth”

The Craigslist ad says:

“- Walking distance to Metro (Green Line – U St. station), shopping and restaurants
– Open kitchen design with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops
– Washer/dryer
– Large sunny energy-efficient windows
– 900 square feet
– Secure building
– Off-street parking option is available
– Great landlord and neighbors”

I’m posting this one becuase I’ve walked by the building dozens of times and was curious to see some photos of the units. Assuming you get a roomate is $2500 reasonable for a 2 bedroom? If you’re not looking for a roomate, I was also intrigued by this studio for $1300 located at 16th and Park Road, NW.

“Dear PoP,

I noticed a party of 5 people entering the vacant (and what appears somewhat renovated) large tan house located on the corner of Park and 11th (across from Red Rocks). It looked like they were being given a tour.

Do you know the current status of this building? I’ve assumed for a while renovations were made at one point (all the windows are brand new), but I assumed the owner had gone under and ceased operations.

With the building adjacent building at 11th and Monroe rumored as purchased, I’m guessing this would make this property very worth while.”

Thanks to Kevin Wood for letting me know that the property is back on the market. You can see the listing here. It’s yours for $1,500,000.

This building is located at 3500 New Hampshire Ave, NW:

The flier says:

“Detached 2-unit building in heart of Columbia Heights comprised of two 1BR 1BA apartments, each with separate kitchen and spacious living room, gas/baseboard heat, & wall unit cooling. Each unit is separately metered for electric & gas, but there is NO CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCY – call for details. Tenants month-to-month.”

You can find more info here.

Even though there are no interior photos, I’m super curious what you think about this property. Given all the info above does $299,000 sound reasonable?

From a DDOT press release:

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will begin roadway repairs as part of the final stage of Phase II of the Columbia Heights Public Realm Project. Crews are scheduled to begin a three week pavement excavation and asphalt paving project starting in the center lanes on northbound 14th Street from Park Road to Monroe Street, NW, weather permitting.

Construction crews will begin placing concrete traffic barriers after 9 a.m. on March 26 to cordon off the work area.

A single lane of traffic will be maintained at all times, in both directions. Motorists should be aware of transitions and lane changes due to the construction.

Businesses along this busy commercial corridor will remain open during construction with unrestricted access.

The Metrobus stop at Park Road and 14th St. will be relocated temporarily to north of Monroe St.

DDOT Traffic Control Officers (TCOs) will be positioned at the intersections during am and pm rush-hours to help facilitate traffic. Flagmen and Variable Message Signs will be utilized to assist in directing the flow of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
