A reader reports:
“We park our car in the alley on the south side of the 1300 block of Fairmont. When we left to run some errands around 9:00 am Saturday morning, there was a bunch of men’s clothes dumped in a pile at the end of the alley. When we returned around noon, the pile of clothes was on fire.
I called 9-1-1 but Engine 4 was already on it way. I back out and went to take some pictures. It was a little higher when I first saw it, but the attached picture show the gist. Engine 4 had a little trouble getting into the alley but the firefighters dragged the hose and put out the fire without incident.
In chatting with the three firefighters, we all had the same theory for why a pile of men’s clothes would be dumped in an alley and set alight. I’m just glad the (I assume) scorned woman waited until my car wasn’t in it customary spot, which is just three yards away. My neighbor says she saw a woman from the Alden (which we already call 90210) lurking earlier but there’s no way to be sure.”

Could today really be the day? Word from J.
“Day #13: Closing in on a full two weeks no hot water at D.C.’s highest traffic gym. Will it actually get fixed? Stay tuned.”

Washington Sports Club in DC USA at 14th and Irving Street, NW

14th and Park Road, NW
I’m gonna give this one 50/50 odds so for what it’s worth a reader hears that an Old Navy could be coming to the old Children’s Place and/or the adjacent Staples space in DC USA on 14th Street. STAY TUNED.

“Dear PoPville,
Alright everyone, I’m taking bets. How many days until there’s hot water again? I pay $70 a month for a basic gym membership at Washington Sports Club in Columbia Heights.
Day #3: They’ve printed new signs – impressive. Real progress over here at WSC Columbia Heights
Day #5: I really want to talk about “heavy volume of use.” This gym is in a city center – you advertise nonstop going into the New Year and then fail miserably to serve new members.
I’d like to note the staff are wonderful, competent people but the institution could be doing more to service their regular customers who are getting price gouged due to lack of competition (i.e. basic operational functions).”
Ed. Note WSC replied: “We’re very sorry for the inconvenience but we assure you we’re doing all we can at the moment.”

Update:

Thanks to all who’ve messaged about this. Back in January 2009 we reported It’s Official – Columbia Heights Gets an Unofficial Dog Park at 11th and Park.
“Dear PoPville,
Help us save our beloved dog park!! The magical place all the lucky neighborhood dogs and humans get to go to to let their sillies out.
The lot, most warmly termed the 11th & Park Rd NW Dog Park is potentially under threat of closure. Through talks facilitated by local representatives and direct with WMATA (Metro), we’ve found out that WMATA, who owns the plot of land, is considering putting it up for sale for commercial use.
