2737 Sherman Avenue, NW

Thanks to Nita for sending word about Napoli Pasta Bar, great news for Park View/Pleasant Plains/Columbia Heights!!

“We are excited to recognize Napoli Pasta Bar, which opened in March of this year. The place is a real win for Sherman Ave., and the kitchen delivers serious and authentic Neapolitan fare. The neighborhood-friendly, laid back atmosphere makes for a fine pairing with the wonderfully prepared dishes.

For those not familiar with the accolade:

“Introduced in 1955, Bib Gourmand restaurants are selected by Michelin’s famously anonymous food inspectors, who choose restaurants serving high quality food on their menus and make it possible to order two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for $40 or less (tax and gratuity not included).”

Here is the complete Bib Gourmand Selection released yesterday: (more…)

3115 14th Street, NW at Kenyon

Thanks to Brian, Aman, Jess and all who messaged about the change coming to The Heights. Jess notes:

“The identity crisis of the Heights continues! First the destruction of the bar and the self serve beer, then the salad bar and pizza signs, then the corn dog appetizers, and now this… At this point it’s just funny.”

Ed. Note: Choong Man Chicken (& Seafood) opened up on H Street, NE in Spring 2017. Anyone know if it’s the same folks?

From MPD

“Good morning. The Third District is currently investigating a shooting that is believed to have taken place early this morning in the 1100 block of Irving Street NW. An adult male walked into an area hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Anyone with information is asked to call 202-727-9099.”

“Dear PoPville,

I was heading into DCUSA in Columbia Heights yesterday afternoon when I saw something that disturbed me. There’s always a crowd of people outside the entrance selling random things: fruit, art, toys, shoes, whatever.

This time, I saw a pair of glass tanks, one containing fish, the other turtles.

As you would expect there was a huge crowd around the tank, reaching in, touching the animals, arguing with the vendor, everything. (more…)

Rendering by PGN via Zoning Case Records

ANC Rep Kent Boese reports: “I expect this will be on October agenda for ANC 1A”

The zoning application says:

“The Applicant proposes to raze the existing residential buildings, combine the four lots into a single record lot, and construct a four-story, 26-unit apartment building with cellar level and compliant penthouse on the Property (the “Project”). The height of the Project will rise to no greater than 50 feet as permitted in the MU-4 Zone. (more…)

11th and Fairmont Street, NW

In late July we posted about the new Pho Viet opening at 11th and Fairmont St, NW. It wasn’t clear if they were the same owners as on 14th (and the coming Bun DC opening August 25th) but Will updates us:

“I did ask them and it is the same owners. They confirmed that and told me they opened two weeks ago. It’s a small restaurant with two tables, some window seats and I believe one working in the kitchen. Had it the other day was really good.”

Rachel reports:

“We went to the new Pho Viet over on 11th for dinner. According to the young couple running it, it seems they are not actually of the same family as the other Pho Viet, Bun DC, etc.

My husband and I shared the shrimp spring rolls and each had the spicy lemongrass beef pho. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I want to tell you about a near death experience I had while riding one of those electronic scooters.

I was riding up 14th in the bike lane with a green light ahead. As I was passing by Girard St, a mid sized car traveling the opposite direction came barreling down 14th St and without stopping took a left on Girard cutting me off. Just a second from a direct impact, I jumped off the scooter and fell to the ground, narrowly missing what could have been a fatal encounter. I’m scuffed up but the situation has me pretty shaken up.

Wondering if any your readers have had similar terrifying situations on these scooters? My hunch is that the driver never saw me due to the lack of light/size of me on a scooter vs the size of a bike.

Would you ride a scooter again if you were me? (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I was in a bike accident last Tuesday (August 7) around 6pm at 14th St NW and Monroe in Columbia Heights. I was cut off by a car, breaked really hard, my bike skid, and I took a pretty bad fall that ended with a bloody forehead, a bum knee, and an evening in the ER. I’m writing in because I finally got around to picking up the police report to realize that the officer did not collect information from the driver of the car and simply stated I fell of my bike, potentially “due to congestion on the road”.
