Another disturbing report from a reader:
“This was so disturbing and even more annoying that I couldn’t get 911 to pick up.
I witnessed 3 young guys corner a guy in broad daylight in the middle of the street 9th and H St NW about 5 PM and start beating him. Everyone started screaming cars were honking because they were literally blocking rush hour traffic. Tons of witnesses and people rushing to break it up. I called 911 and was on hold…Never got through but I think someone did. It ended and everyone just walked away including the guy that was getting beat up which was suspicious. By the time I reached Gallery Place 2 blocks later I saw cop cars arriving but I’m not sure what they could’ve done…”

“Pure”, by Manuel Pandalis, North American Premiere opening at the Leica Store Gallery DC
Manuel Pandalis’ images take audiences through a raw and intimate visual exploration of human physiognomy. With the rejection of strict poses, make-up, and intense post-production he allows his models to come as they are, creating unique portraits that focus upon the subjects face and revelations that are ultimately exposed through the human gaze.
Developing an increasing interest in concepts that went beyond the ideas that bind his commercial work Pandalis decided to free the professional models he worked with from the perpetual variety of characters they were painted and edited into being. “Some time ago, I realized I was fascinated less by a model’s façade than by the person behind it. For me, beauty is first revealed when I feel a rapport with the person.”
Stripping his subjects down to expose every rough edge, he explores the personality and character of each person, to reveal the individual without superficial masks. The resulting images are more like facial landscapes, which act as an invitation for the audience to look more closely. It is a series that truly lives up to its name; it’s simple, honest photography.

Earlier in the week we learned that Freshii had closed next to E Street Cinema. A very good source tells me that &Pizza will be opening up another location here. Currently &Pizza is located on H Street and U Street. They’ll soon open up in Brookland. And, perhaps, in trying to dominate the entire the DC pizza market – Washington Business Journal also reports &Pizza has leased a space at 14th and K Street, NW.

Yesterday we noted after two years there was finally some serious progress at the Red Apron spot coming to Penn Quarter. Thanks to Lisa for sharing a couple of Craigslist ads about hiring for Red Apron and the attached restaurant next door – The Partisan:
“The Partisan is hiring for all restaurant positions!
The Partisan, a new restaurant concept by Neighborhood Restaurant Group, is a full service restaurant highlighting the Red Apron charcuterie of Chef and Butcher Nate Anda along with unique meat-centric dishes from Chef Ed Witt. The menu is designed to encourage sharing, showcasing 100’s of cured and aged meats through a variety of cooking techniques, including whole animal rotisserie. The restaurant will also feature an extensive wine list with a large selection of sustainably produced wines on tap, draft beers and craft cocktails intended to highlight our quality products.
All of our charcuterie is handmade by our culinary team, and all dishes are prepared using responsibly raised meats and locally sourced products. Service will be smart and informative while maintaining a relaxed dining experience. All Partisan candidates should possess a passion for food and hospitality, as well as a genuine interest in friendly and informative customer service. Expect a vibrant, educational atmosphere where you will have room to grow!
The Partisan will be attached to the Red Apron Butcher and is part of the Neighborhood Restaurant Group (NRG). NRG’s businesses include: the Evening Star Cafe, Planet Wine, Vermilion, Rustico, Buzz Bakery, Tallula, EatBar, Star Catering, Columbia Firehouse, Birch & Barley, Churchkey, GBD Chicken and Donuts, The Iron Gate Inn and Bluejacket brewery and restaurant. NRG is also directly involved in the creation and support of the Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture.”

This was the former planned second location for a Yo Sushi. Sports Zone Elite will be located right next to Panera by the Chinatown Arch across the street from the metro.

Freshii opened up by E Street Cinema back in Feb. 2012. Their location at 2001 M St, NW closed back in Sept. 2012. Freshii remains open at 1019 15th St, NW:

It was almost exactly two years ago that we first heard the good word that a Red Apron Butchery was coming to Penn Quarter. I had about given up hope but my spirits have revived after peeking in the window:

Huge news from the Post:
“LivingSocial will stop producing live events and close its facility at 918 F St. NW this spring as executives focus the business on providing merchants with an online platform to market their products, the company said Friday.”

Chef Enzo Fargione writes on Don Rockwell:
“Our restaurant is now officially closed for good.
I’ll see you soon………”
