From a press release:

“Award-winning D.C. chef and restaurateur Victor Albisu announces a June 19 opening for Poca Madre, his high-end, contemporary Mexican restaurant adjacent to the Chinatown location of his wildly popular taqueria, Taco Bamba.

While Taco Bamba Chinatown delivers on the big menu, no-frills, rock & roll ambience that earned the Northern Virginia suburban locations cult status, Poca Madre is a juxtaposition in form and function. The elevated design, from the garden patio to the intimately lit dining room, complement a polished menu and mezcal-driven bar program unlike anything else diners will find in D.C.

“There’s so much more to Mexican cooking than what we typically see in the States,” Albisu said. “Some of the discoveries we made in Mexico while on research trips, first for Taco Bamba and later Poca Madre, just blew me away. I had to find a way to bring those flavors back to D.C. From centuries-old palenques in Oaxaca to chic, contemporary fine dining in Mexico City, there is so much going on that’s worth the spotlight, and I’m doing my part to shine on it.”

“Dear PoPville,

First, let me say that although I am not a hockey fan, I AM very excited for the Capitals! I just have questions. Starting yesterday, MPD had blocked off 6th St NW from H to E St, and F St NW from 5th to 7th. My understanding is there isn’t even a game here until Saturday, so… what is all this stuff? Will it be like this until the hockey is over (which I hope will end with a celebratory parade)?”

It’s cause we have the greatest fans – the scene outside Capital One Arena Last night (where there are viewing parties):

From MPD:

Inside the Pod Hotel @ 627 H Street NW. Barrelhouse Brunch at Crimson Whiskey Bar.

From a press release:

“Crimson Whiskey Bar, located downstairs from the lobby of the Pod Hotel in Chinatown, is now offering Barrelhouse Brunch, served every Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm.

Chefs Lawrence DiJoseph and Erick Morales sling an array of Southern-inspired, hangover-friendly entrees, like their Bayou Benedict (poached eggs and fried oysters over an English muffin and drenched in rich hollandaise), Creole Strata (a baked egg, andouille, and shrimp colossus), and the don’t-miss signature, the Gold Plate Special–savory country fried chicken and melted cheese sandwiched between to halves of a sliced-and-grilled vanilla-bean-glazed doughnut. “another one bites the dust in Chinatown. Saw this on the California Tortilla this morning, with all the windows papered over”

California Tortilla joins RFD, Ping Pong Dim Sum and Fuddruckers as relatively recent closures in Chinatown. Updates when we learn what becomes of the space.

Thanks to nevermindtheend for the sending:

“So there were ADAPT protesters blocking the roadway on F Street between 6th and 7th yesterday, right at the peak of the PM rush. (Information about the protest here.) Police decided that it was a good idea to let cars out of the parking lot on the south side of the street and direct them ONTO THE SIDEWALK on the north side of the street so they could get to 7th Street.

To do this, access to Gallery Place Station was completely blocked off to pedestrians walking westbound on F Street. There was no warning at 6th Street that the sidewalk was closed 3/4 of the way down the street and police didn’t even bother to alternate letting cars through and letting pedestrians through. It’s quite clear that this city prioritized cars over people.”

Update from the Chief of Police:

“Dear PoPville,

I was at E Street Cinema this past weekend to see Tully (great movie!). I was seated alone near the end of a row, and there were about a dozen other people in the theater. Before the start of the movie, a man sat at the end of my row, two seats away. Once the movie started after the previews, I could see from the corner of my eye that he was constantly looking over at me, trying to catch my attention, and I noticed that he was making a “rhythmic motion” with his hand at the opening of his loose-fitting gym shorts. I froze and stared at the screen. (more…)
