“Dear PoPville,

Do you know what the big wooden enclosure is outside the Thurgood Marshall Judiciary Building, on Mass. Ave next to Union Station? It’s pretty elaborate — the wood panels even have decorative trim — and building-sized, and it’s been there at least a month. The one time I saw the gate open, all I could see inside was a few parked trucks. Any ideas?”

The Hill is Home reported back in June:

“According to one of the workers installing the fenced area late last week, the [Thurgood Marshall Federal Judiciary] building needs roof repairs. The fence will hold construction materials, machinery, and trailers for about 17 months.”

“Someone left these all over the cars in Capitol Hill. I guess they’re not familiar with the concept of cars coming and going throughout the day, causing irregular gaps which may not have been there when the person pulled in.”

“Dear PoPville,

I think a local artist was either robbed, or their entire car was stolen, and it looks like the crooks dumped his or her work in our alley on the Hill. Lots of maps, some framed, like the one shown in the photo, all titled “Inside the Beltway” and then numerous painted works on small pieces of wood. Looks like Eastern Market vendor type work, but don’t recognize it. I’ve included a photo of the signature on the maps if anyone recognizes it. Hoping to get these back to the artist before they’re wrecked.

Anyone who knows who these may belong to can email me at hillresident123(at)gmail.com”

Thanks to a reader for sending this awesome accolade about Rose’s Luxury from Bon Appetit magazine:

Later, as I’m finishing my whiskey and paying the bill, I realize why those people were willing to wait two-plus hours for a table in a city whose food culture is otherwise known mostly for power lunches: Rose’s is a game-changer.

There is a lot that sets it apart, starting with the warm, farmhouse-style dining room, kitchen-counter seating, and atrium glowing with string lights. There is the knowledgeable and friendly service. And, of course, the eclectic menu: Southern comfort food threaded with globe-trotting ingredients and ideas from Southeast Asia, Mexico, Italy, and France.

While chef-owner Aaron Silverman is clearly concerned with the food that goes out on his plates, he pays even closer attention to the people eating it. And that’s when it hits me: Rose’s isn’t just in the restaurant business; it’s in the making-people-happy business.

Read the full account ‘To find out what makes a meal here so special, I spent 12 hours trailing Silverman on a weekday in early June. Let’s just say the brilliance of Rose’s isn’t by accident.’

2nd and Maryland Ave, NE

A reader reports:

“A shirtless man was banging on parked cars and it took ~5 cops/Cap police to bring him down. A few minutes later I counted 22 police on the scene – ems, cops, cap police, police on bikes, even one in street clothes with his gun tucked into his waistband. Traffic is getting by ok. Looks like they’re going to load him into the ambulance. They seem pretty jolly out there – some laughter and shaking hands. TGIF.”

Thanks to a reader for sending the great new mural above:

“At the Eastern Market swimming pool. Looks AWESOME in person.”

From a press release:

“Mayor Vincent C. Gray kicked off the 2014 season of MuralsDC with a splash on Thursday, July 31, at the William Rumsey Aquatic Facility at 635 North Carolina Avenue, SE. The event featured a carnival-like atmosphere, made possible by Cirque du Soleil, which included acrobatic acts by the TSNY DC trapeze school, face painting, animal balloons, cotton candy, snow cones and music. More than 100 local children and adults attended the event to celebrate a new mural at the facility.

During the festivities, local artist Aniekan Udofia completed an original work of art on the entrance of the facility. The mural, which features a mermaid-like girl swimming in a sea of color, has already been received with great enthusiasm by the immediate community, say DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) officials.”
