Last week I, again, lamented the loss of the great HR-57. Perhaps it is time to stop lamenting and start celebrating a new(ish) spot in Brookland. A glowing review from November happened to come across my Facebook page recently from Capitalbop:

“On a recent Sunday night at Brookland’s Jazz and Cultural Society, Dr. John Lamkin II piped luscious, honey tones from his trumpet, propelling his quartet through Miles Davis’ “Seven Steps to Heaven.” Trading crisp solos, the group of dapperly suited musicians went on from there to play a range of jazz standards, electrifying the intimate, amber-lit room, which quickly reached standing-room-only status.”

The Jazz and Cultural Society’s website says:

“The Jazz and Cultural Society is a not-for-profit jazz club in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, DC.

All shows are $5 at the door (cash only) unless otherwise noted.

Most shows run from 6:00-9:00 pm (drop by anytime you like).

All ages are welcome. Beverages are $1 a piece. No alcohol is allowed or served on premises. The Jazz and Cultural Society now sells food. Please support a local catering company and refrain from bringing in outside food and beverages into the establishment.

JACS is located at 2813 12th street NE DC between Rhode Island Avenue and Brookland Metro stations, close to bus lines and there is plenty of street parking too.”

It would be great if they had BYOB like the old HR-57 but this sounds amazing. Anyone stop by yet?

“Dear PoPville,

Would you please consider running a post about the crime in Brookland, in particular recent slew of car vandalisms and break-ins along Newton Street NE between 1200 and 1600 blocks? On the 26th of December I walked out onto my front porch to find a group of 6 young black men rifling through my neighbors car. When I realized they clearly weren’t my neighbor I yelled to distract them and then called the police. My neighbor said she had her car locked that evening. On the 29th of December, I was sitting on my couch and heard loud voices on the street early around 1am. When I looked out my front window, I noticed there were about 10 young men inside another neighbor’s car across the street, doors and hatch opened. I quickly grabbed the phone and called 911 and in both cases, the police responded promptly, but unfortunately these men dissipated quickly. My other neighbor also said her car was locked when the police arrived. (more…)

dog

“We found a dog walking in the woodridge/brookland area. We have it in our backyard until the humane society arrives. The dog is very sweet. We provided food and water.

Update: The Washington Humane Society just came by to pick her up. I wish I had more time to wait before someone would reply to the post, but we have a dog in the house already.”

Wardman Wines tweets us the good news yesterday:

“Grand Opening this Friday!”

Their website says:

“At Wardman Wines, we have carefully selected wines, beers, and spirits from around the world. Our goal is to make wine buying easy and approachable. Our knowledgeable staff is available to provide advice and make recommendations, and a selection of wines is always available to taste at the bar. Want to learn more about wine? We hold regular tasting classes to make you more comfortable with the world and language of wine.

Wardman Wines takes its name from the Wardman-style row house, a familiar feature of many DC neighborhoods. Generations of DC residents have grown up in these homes, which are named for real-estate developer Harry Wardman. These houses are integral to the fabric of Washington, and we hope that, in time, Wardman Wines can also become integral to our surrounding community.”

Hours are:

Monday-Thursday: 12:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m.
Friday: 10:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m.
Saturday: 9:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m.
Sunday: 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

and they deliver too!

A reader reports:

“Just wanted to share this because I’m VERY EXCITED: a friend was telling me that the owners of Menomale are opening up an Italian deli/fresh pasta to go place a few doors down from the restaurant [2711 12th Street, NE]. I was skeptical at first because it’s not the first time I’ve been told something was opening up in that space, but they’ve started doing renovations so it looks like it’s actually happening!”

Ed. Note: Back in June of last year we first heard word of Menomale’s pasta plans. Glad to hear it’s moving forward – updates as they get closer to opening.

Thanks to all who emailed and tweeted @PoPville last night:

“I wanted to pass along in case other Brookland residents emailed you for information, since it seems like there was a breakdown in communication (between Metro PD Twitter/Catholic Student Body/surrounding neighbors). Some Catholic students in my building informed me that there was an active shooter on campus at least an hour before we received an alert from our building management. Campus and the surrounding streets were shut down and we were told to shelter in place. The forwarded message is the most recent update saying the shooter (details not provided regarding whether actual shots had been fired or if anyone on campus had been injured) has been apprehended.”

From MPD:

Members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Fourth District responded to the Catholic University of American campus at approximately 7:45 pm for a suspicious person. Officers on the scene were not searching for an armed suspect. Upon further investigation, that person was located. The situation was resolved without incident and the area has been cleared at this time.

The Catholic University Tower reported:

“A person of interest identified tonight is not the same person from last night. Reports of bomb threats in the Library and O’Connell Hall are unfounded and there have been no evacuations.”

ToysForTotsBP (1)

From Brookland Pint:

“We are currently in the middle of our annual Toys for Tots toy drive. As you know the USMCR holds an annual toy drive to benefit children who don’t have the means for a traditional Christmas. The objectives of Toys for Tots are to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future. We are proud to join the Marine Corps Reserve in making this mission a reality.

To support these objectives Brookland Pint has offered a 10% discount on all tabs where a new, unwrapped, toy was donated. We will also be holding a fundraiser 4 for Toys for Tots on the evening of Thursday, December 3rd. From 6-9 that night we will be welcoming representatives of the Marine Corps who will be on site to collect donations. We will also be raffling of gift cards and prizes from other local businesses, offering 20% off your tab with a toy donation, and will have discounted beer and wine for all. Please join us in bringing together the community by providing a brighter holiday season to those less fortunate.”
