“Brookland’s Finest will partner with DC Brau on a series of weekly beer dinners every Wednesday throughout the month of December, starting Wednesday December 2nd, and continuing during regular dinner service on December 9th, 16th and 23rd and 30th. Chef/co-owner Shannan Troncoso will prepare a $35 prix fixe, three course menu with DC Brau pairings, including new seasonal releases, which will change each week.

Letter from the SCRAP USA National Executive Director:
Dear Friends and SCRAP Supporters,
SCRAP DC is going underground! Just like in nature, we will lay low until the Spring.As you all know better than anyone, the cost of doing business in the District is staggering. For a small nonprofit, it is too much. But watch for us to re-emerge in the Spring with the same mission and a new shiny coat of colors.
Our store doors will close on November 22, but that’s not the end of us! You can watch for clues of where we will pop up next on our website and Facebook page.
As for now, we will not be taking any more donations beginning immediately. You can expect great sales through November. Our hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 12-6p.
We love you, Brookland! Thank you for the great support you’ve shown us.

“The Fifth District is currently investigating a shooting/carjacking/robbery that occurred at approximately 1:00 AM on November 12, 2015 at District Towing 909 Franklin St. N.E. Five (5) suspects, three with hand guns, carjacked a citizen while retrieving his vehicle at District Towing. During the carjacking, they also robbed the citizen of his keys and money. The suspects then noticed two tow crane drivers in a tow truck and attempted to rob them. As they drove off, the suspects fired several rounds at the tow crane.
The carjacked vehicle is a 2012 white Jaguar with Maryland Tag 9BF1929.
Anyone who has information regarding this case should call police at 202-727-9099. Additionally, information may be submitted to the TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.”

“This week the Brookland neighborhood will witness the passing of the hammer, er, torch as Annie’s Ace Hardware opens and Brookland True Value closes shop after 35 years. To staff her second store, Anne Stom, the owner of Annie’s Ace Hardware has hired all of the employees from the former Brookland True Value hardware store. “We are thrilled to be able to continue providing the knowledgeable service that community residents have experienced at Brookland Hardware in an updated environment,” said Stom. “Between these six employees, we have gained over 100 years of retail hardware experience that will enhance our ability to serve the Brookland community”.
In addition, Howard Politzer, owner of the former Brookland Hardware has been hired to serve as a Senior Advisor for both locations of Annie’s Ace Hardware. Howard is eager to teach his skills to a younger group of people. “Annie and I believe that the expertise that I have developed over the years can be passed on to her employees to create a true hardware store experience for customers by providing services that cannot be replicated in a big box store.”
The new Annie’s Ace Hardware will open on November 10 and is the second location for the popular neighborhood hardware store. The first location opened in the Petworth neighborhood to rousing success in 2012. (more…)

“On the heels of Pope Francis’s historic visit to the Brookland neighborhood, the area will soon attract more visitors: homebuyers checking out Lock7 Development’s all-new condominiums at Brooks Row. This community of 22 townhome-style residences at 2724 12th Street, NE will offer two-level living, private outdoor space, and designated outdoor parking. Urban Pace is about to start presales for the two-bedroom and three-bedroom condominiums, which are scheduled to deliver early next spring, with prices starting in the high $400,000’s.
“Brookland is a really unique part of the city because it’s less dense than many other neighborhoods, so there’s a great deal of trees and green space,” said Lock7’s David Gorman. “It’s also Metro-accessible and very walkable, and you get a lot more space for your money than in other urban neighborhoods.”
“However, the single-family houses in Brookland have gotten very expensive, with a handful of recent sales topping $1 million,” Gorman went on. “We wanted to provide buyers with large units and lots of space for living and storage at an obtainable price point.”

Back in November of last year we learned that this is where Right Proper would be opening their production brewery and tasting room. Right Proper Brewing Company‘s brew pub is of course in Shaw next to the Howard Theatre. But this place is pretty damn sweet in its own right. First off it’s straight up brewery porn – can produce up between 10,000-15,000 barrels a year with room to expand. So prepare to see them in many more restaurants and bars around town. And if all goes well the tasting room will be open the first week of December (knock wood, knock wood.) Hours will be Thursday and Friday 5-9pm and Saturday and Sunday 1-9pm. To orient you – this is located just on the otherside of the tracks from Dew Drop Inn. Ok some more cool stuff before you feast on the photos – mural outside was done by Nico Amortegui. Mural inside (still in progress when I stopped by) is again done by the Patrick Owens who did the work in Shaw.
Ok the beer – first kegs. Then 750ml bottles of Nathan Zeender’s good stuff. Growler filling available of course. But also – canning should start around Memorial Day!!
As for the tasting room in addition to growler fills of course you can get pints. There’s a sweet sound system – and you gotta see this freaking bathroom. Well done Thor and team, well done. (more…)
