filter
8th and Monroe Street, NE

Yesterday on the Brookland listserv a resident shared:

“The manager of Filter shared yesterday when I was there that they are closing their Monroe St. location on Sunday (4/30) due to insufficient business. The bike shop will remain, and his understanding is that they have plans to open something more food-centric in the space where the coffee shop has been.”

I spoke with the owner of the Bike Rack who tells me that Little Red Fox will be taking over the space!! You can expect:

“variety of healthy take out foods, breakfast burritos and coffee drinks.”

Stay tuned for lots more info next week.

noise

“Dear PoPville,

For the past few weeks, I’ve been hearing a bass sound (like a stereo at low volume but with the bass turned up) in and around my house on the southwest end of Brookland. I chalked it up to house parties for a while, but finally grew so annoyed with it that I went out looking for the origin late tonight, when traffic and other noises would be low and I could get a bead on where it was coming from. Needless to say, I did not find the source. The rain probably hampered my pursuit, since I’m sure my umbrella was causing some echoes.

I know I’m not going mad since I’ve recorded the sound electronically and listened to it on playback to confirm that it does exist. I even went up to a couple cops parked nearby while on my walkabout and asked them if they heard it (they did, but didn’t know where it was coming from). I have literally no theories…there’s no construction/recently finished buildings nearby, no new bars/clubs, etc. (more…)

utility pole

A reader reports:

“Badly damaged utility pole at busy intersection of 12th and Monroe NE. I called it into 311 and emergency management but they pawned it off on Pepco. Surprised the city wouldn’t be at least a little concerned about a safety hazard like this. They told me to call Pepco. I ultimately convinced emergency management to take down the intersection info, but they didn’t suggest they would do anything.

To their credit, Pepco has an accessible emergency reporting line. I got to a human in under a minute, and they said they’d send someone to check it out. Still, strange for the city not to take the initiative once something like this is reported.”

food pantry
Photo by PoPville flickr user Clif Burns

“Dear PoPville,

I am a parent at Lee Montessori Public Charter school located in Brookland/Edgewood. Our school has been open for 3 years, and in that timeframe the parents have started a clothing and food bank for those students who have financial need. We also did a toy drive over the holiday last year, and every child at our school had something to open over the holiday season. Our families believe in community and taking care of each other.

The food bank is accessible to our school social worker (who discreetly distributes the food), and any family who has a need can seek access to it. We supply families with food on long weekends, holidays, and when there are potential snow day disruptions.

The reason I am writing is because we are a small school (only 150+ kids), and we are struggling to keep up the food bank donations. We are working to keep the pantry full but the demand lately outpaces our ability to keep it stocked. I write to see if the readers have any suggestions on local non-profits who might be able to help us or any other suggestions on what we can do to have a full pantry before Spring Break hits in a few weeks.

Frederick Nunley writes:

“This hawk was dining on a small bird in our front yard a while back when my partner and I returned home from shopping. Not 15 feet from our front door it watched us unload and go inside then I returned and stood as close as possible to get some good shots with my camera. People were passing by not seeing it until we pointed it out. So they are all around if you take the time to look up and observe local wildlife birds especially. Directly across from Turkey Thicket Playground.”

If you spot a hawk or any other bird of prey around town, lunching or otherwise, please send a photo and an email where you spotted it to [email protected] and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.
